Ronald Steel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2023.
Ronald Alan Steel died unexpectedly in August of 2022 at age 68. He was born in New Jersey to Malachi Edward Steel and Eleanor Steel. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Deborah, his two brothers Edward Steel Jr., (Barbara) and Barry Steel (Barbara), his son Christopher Steel (Hayley), daughter Tracy Delametter (Dana), and two grandsons, Jack and Cooper.

At West Virginia Wesleyan College, he earned All-American honors, and was part of the All-South and All-Region soccer teams, and a four-time All-Conference WVIAC selection. To this day, he still holds several goal-scoring records for men's soccer at the college, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019. He remained close friends with his teammates and Chi Phi fraternity brothers through the rest of his life. It was also at West Virginia Wesleyan that he met his wife during their freshman year.

After initially working in athletics, he moved into sales, eventually co-founding an apparel business in 2007, a personal goal of his. He and his wife raised their two children in Southern California. He was an involved, loving father, coaching baseball and softball teams, giving driving lessons, helping with homework, and occasionally dog training. He was known for his warm, outgoing personality, dry sense of humor, immaculate punctuality, his love of golf and dogs, and his infamous sweet tooth.

Most importantly, he was fiercely devoted to his family and friends, and could always be counted on if a loved one was in need. In his last few years, he enjoyed retirement and being a doting Papa to his two grandsons.

Had a flash back tonight that brought tears to my eyes. We were having bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer for dinner and they weren´t that good. We tried to remember when we had them better and it was when we had them with Ron and Debbie. And it just so happened that I had seen this email regarding a memory website from Legacy about five minutes before this. What a wonderful coincidence. Love you, Ron. I hope your family is doing well.
Sincerely, Ray Tucker and Betty.

Ron was always a fun guy to play golf with. Never took the game or himself over seriously. Made him easy and fun to be around. The only person who ever called me Ray-Ray and I liked it. I still miss him.

Ron and Debbie were such a big part of our lives when they lived in Natick and then Norfolk. My mom and dad loved both of them so much, and they had a real soft spot for Ron. My mom would not stop singing his praises! We shared so many great holidays with them over the years, with lots of love and laughs. I can not think of Ron without immediately thinking of M&Ms. He was truly 'one of the good guys'. We feel very lucky to have had him in our lives.

Some people make a positive and lasting impression on your life. Ron will forever be on my mind and in my heart. While our times together were not frequent enough, every moment the McCooks spent with Ron was special.
Every time I tee it up on #1 anywhere I wish Ron was in the foursome.
Profound sympathies to Debbie, Tracy, Chris and the Steel family.

I feel very special to have been able to spend so much time with Ron and his family due to being such close friends with Tracy. My parents and I always felt welcomed and loved in his home. He was serious and strong, but also had an active inner child. He would often call our house to ask if my dad could come out and play. My dad would talk about the hours they spent talking and playing golf. When my parents would come to pick me up from a day of play at the Steels, Tracy and I could often get away with an extra hour or two together because Ron would have my parents laughing and having a great time. I saw what a great dad he was and how much he loved his family through his actions and words.
The Bass family misses you!

I can't believe it's been a year without Ron. The obituary says it all. I will forever miss him and our arguments which always ended in a hug. A great giant with a heart of gold. Tracy, Chris and Debbie. Know that he could never stop talking about you and your achievements. His life was dedicated to you and his friends and family. I miss that smile and those crazy suit jackets and ties he would come up with and most of all him coming to the office in golf shorts and shirts with white socks pulled all the wag up and sneakers. I really miss him.

The words captured by Ron´s family are such a vivid memory of him. He was wonderful family man and friend. He loved people, and he loved our Golden. She couldn´t wait to greet him, excited beyond measure! You were a big presence, Ron, and because of that we feel your absence so much. May your family have peace and go forward with newly found joy.

Ron was one of the kindest sweetest people I ever had the privilege of knowing. We played golf together at Bella Collina for a number of years. One year we had the good fortune of winning our flight during the member-guest tournament. This was just after he had moved away from San Clemente. It was a golf career highlight I think for both of us. He was just such a joy to be around. I miss him a lot and think of him often.
