Ron, It's been 16 years, but you are not forgotten and never will be. You taught me the meaning of what a true soldier should be, and I thank you for that. You are a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Strong in stature, soft at heart. I miss you brother. Never Forget, Warrior First.

I stumbled across a video of SFC Wood's memorial service in Afghanistan and was deeply moved by the final salute his fellow soldiers gave him. So much so that I found myself wanting to know more about him and the legacy he left behind. I know that SFC Wood's is in heaven watching over all of us. May you rest in peace.

This is from Dad to you, my son. Of the 28 years that I knew you, you were always kind and good-natured. Your greatness was always there, and it blossomed in later years. You were always the quintessential Boy Scout. You were always a HERO! You didn't like to hunt and kill. You understood the necessity of that, that terrible thing. I believe that you decided to give your life rather than take life. Be the boy and the scout, be the man, your last words. -- Love, Dad

SFC Ronald Tanner Wood, our sweet Ronnie, was killed in action on July 16, 2005, in Kirkuk, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom at the age of 28. Our family and friends are all thinking of him and honoring him today, along with all of the other soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for America. We miss him and love him dearly, and we will always cherish him for the wonderful person that he was. He was the ultimate example of a person who truly lived the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Everyone who knew him loved him deeply because he was such a kind and caring person to others, and he always put other people first. He was also a ball of fun, with a great sense of humor and the love of laughter. We love you and miss you very much, Ronnie!!

In Memory of Ronald ~ (Debra Estep)

July 17, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ronald, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Ronnie - incredibly kind, tender hearted, gentle, considerate, giving, loyal, honorable, patient and loving are but a very few of the many attributes and words that describe this wonderful young man who always gave completely unselfishly of himself to others and had a heart of gold that completely matched his stature. We were so blessed and honored to have him a member of our family and he will forever and ever be a the hero to us! We miss him so, so very much and think of him daily. I don't know Sgt Wood personally but my son is now serving in the same unit that Sgt wood proudly served in. My son is in S. Iraq carrying out a difficult and weary mission along with other members of his unit from Utah. This great country of ours has been forged upon the sacrifices and dedication of men like Sgt wood. We pray for all of our troops and wish them a speedy and safe return home. I think God gives us warm memories in order for us to remember roses during the winters of our lives.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

It's been a year since Ron was taken from this earth. I can still hear his voice, hear him running up the stairs (always two at a time!), I picture him getting a cup of coffee in my kitchen and I see the tracks his Army boots left in the carpet. I keep expecting to get a call from him or have him walk through our front door, but I know that will never happen again. I can only hold dear the memories I have of him.

We miss Ron so much. We speak of him often, look at his photos around the house and keep him in our prayers, thoughts and hearts daily. We cannot say enough how lucky we were to have Ron as a member of our family. I often tell my small children what a truly wonderful person their Uncle Ron was, how much we love and miss him and how much he loves them, too.

You will forever be our hero! We miss you and we love you, Ron.

I believe- That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

My name is Dustin Ballingham and I am an Airman 1st Class with the USAF Reserve. I read his obituary, and he led a full and plentiful life. Be rest assured that all he did was not in vain. He was fighting for a cause greater than what people want to admit, or know. He died protecting what we now take for granted. I know this is time of sadness, but then again hold it in high regard knowing your son made the ultimate sacrifice for us all. I just hope that I myself get the opprotunity to serve my country for this cause. It's because of soldiers like your son, I will forever be grateful for the chance I have to serve my country on my own power, and free will. May your son and all of your family be blessed with his selflesness. He is now in the graces of God and will be forever. Thank you again.
