Rosalyn Janice Scott

FLORENCE — Funeral service for Ms. Rosalyn Janice Scott will be conducted 12 Noon Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Trinity Baptist Church, Florence. Interment will follow at North View Cemetery directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

Rosalyns musical journey began after her mother recognized her ability to play by ear. At age six, she began piano lessons. When she was eight-years-old, she was paid $3.00 for playing for a nursery school graduation.

She was educated in Florence School District I. While a student at West Florence High School, Rosalyn was the accompanist for the concert choir. Upon graduation, she attended Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina. At Bennett College, she toured with the Concert Choir, serving as the accompanist. She was crowned Miss Bennett College and was featured in Ebony magazine in their feature on Black College Campus Queens. Rosalyn was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She graduated from Bennett College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Pedagogy.

Rosalyn always loved the ministry of church music. At twelve years of age, she was the pianist for the Sunday School at Trinity Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina. After graduating from college, she became the minister of music at Trinity from 1982-1987. She also taught in the Preschool Department at Trinity, and taught private piano lessons.

In September, 1987, Rosalyn became the minister of music at West Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. After her pastor Dr. C. Mackey Daniels became president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc., Rosalyn was appointed national music director for the 2.5 million-member organization.

During her tenure, she organized the West Chestnut Orchestra and the Hand Bell Choir. She was the accompanist for the annual rendering of The Messiah at Zion Baptist Church.

On Monday, September 8, 2008, Rosalyns musical journey on earth ended. She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter, Julianna Zeruiyah; her mother, Julia L. Scott; a sister, Debra Scott; a nephew, Alphonzo Buckner; an aunt, Sadie (Robert) Kinley; an uncle, Henry Lonon; two special and devoted cousins, Kimberly Kinley-Howard, and Juan F. Scott; a host of cousins and relatives, and her West Chestnut Street Baptist Church Family.

Omega Omega Service and family visitation will be Tuesday evening, September 16, 2008 from 7-8PM at J.O. and Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 S. Johns St. and other times the family will receive friends at the home, 511 W. Darlington St., Florence.

To The Scott Family:

Rosalyn was a musical genius and talent. I was in awe and inspired by her presence and talent. She was truly a gifted musician. I thank God for bringing Rosalyn to the West Chestnut Street Baptist Church family for 21 years. I will miss you my friend. Thank you for the years of musical advice, music lessons, friendship and words of wisdom. You were simply the best. Heaven has a great minister of music. Love you forever. God bless you, Scott family. You are in my prayers always.

I am deeply saddened to have just learned of Rosalyn's passing. I was a little freshman in chorus with her at West Florence who could not sing a note. Rosalyn made me her page turner so that I could contribute something. Many days I sat beside her on the piano bench laughing and giggling as only high school girls could. I will always cherish these memories... thank you, Rosalyn, my friend.

Rosalyn and I were good friends at Carver. We used to play together (Emily, Cheryl, Judy and others) at recess and call each other on the phone. I will always cherish those memories in my heart. I pray that her daughter and the rest of the family will be strengthened.

To The Scott Family:

I was saddened to hear of Rosalyn's passing, but as we all know, God needed a Musician and He chose the best one that He could find. Our God is a Good God and He is mistake free.

I've not had contact with Rosalyn in several years, but I stayed in touch with her progress and was very pleased to hear always such great news of what she had done. I often thought about Rosalyn in May because my birthday is May 25th and Rosalyn's is May 26th and that was something we always remembered of each other.

May God bring peace and joy to you all as you hold on to your memories as well as God's hands through the good and the tough times. May God be with you all.

May you find peace, knowing that the Lord gives us confidence and courage to attempt what you ask even when doors appeared locked. Through the power of the holy spirt, we can do far more than we imagine.
May God keep you and bless you.

I know your loss is much greater than mine, but I too will grieve. I went to West Florence with Rosalyn. She was always kind to me and everyone I know of. Her talents will be missed but simply not having her with you is the greater loss. I'm glad she has a daughter, she has a special role model to follow, even though putting Christ first is most important. God bless you all!
Prayerfully yours,

Zeruiyah was blessed with such a wonderful role model. I am very thankful to work with such caring and loving parents as Ms. Scott.

Zeruiyah and her family are in my thoughts and prayers. Celebrate her life, we will, because life is short but sweet for certain.

Julianna Zeruiyah Scott, Mrs.Scott and other family members, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Rosalyn's sudden transition. I remember the good time in the dorm at Bennett College, laughing and talking. I vividly remember Rosalyn and Dr.Charlotte Alston with the Bennett Choir.
