Rose Newhouse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 28 to Nov. 30, 2014.
Rose Alhadeff Newhouse

Rose Alhadeff Newhouse gently passed away in her sleep on November 26, 2014. Her life began in Beirut, Syria on October 19,1919 as the 4th of 5 children born to Rachel and Albert Benaroya. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1921 settling in Vallejo, CA and eventually moving to Seattle where she graduated from Garfield High School.

She married Jack Alhadeff in 1941 and they remained together nearly 40 years until his death in 1980. What was most meaningful to her was maintaining family ties and nurturing relationships with her closest friends, which included her club of 10 remarkable women and their families. She was an active and welcomed presence in their lives. She was renown for her cooking skills and generous hospitality as her home was open to frequent gatherings from major life events, holiday dinners, birthday parties, celebrations with out of town guests and relatives, and Husky football game brunches. Their life together also involved service and philanthropy to a wide variety of local, community, and national organizations and causes.

Several years after Jack Alhadeff passed away she was introduced to Jack Newhouse of Edmonton, Canada. They married on her 70th birthday (he was 80) and enjoyed nearly twenty-five years together until his passing just prior to his 100th birthday.

She is survived by her children Jeanie (Harry Caraco), Alan, and N. Jack Alhadeff, grandchildren Carly (Peter Finkelman), Gabriel, Heidi (Andrew Leonard), Heather, and Dana, 7 great grandchildren, and step-children and their families in Canada. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Becky Benaroya, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large community of family and younger friends from three different generations who affectionately called her Aunt Rose and whom she loved deeply.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday. Dec. 2 at the Summit at First Hill, 1200 University St, Seattle.
