Rose Smart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 19, 2008.
LEE - Rose (Kocur) Smart, 49, passed away Nov. 16, 2008, at her home. She was born May 27, 1959, in Fort Dix, N.J., the daughter of John Joseph and Regina O. (Manzo) Kocur Jr. She attended Orono High School and graduated from the University of Maine - Orono. She owned and operated Riverside Community Center, 43 Fleming St., Lincoln. She worked for AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, Augusta, as a D.E.E.P. facilitator. She was a licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor for more than several years. She was a community mentor for several greater Lincoln area agencies. She worked on the Toys for Tots campaign and received awards for the last two years from the U.S. Marine Corps for her hard work. She was an advocate for the Coats for Kids program. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and enjoyed outdoor sports activities. Her greatest accomplishment was, in her eyes, becoming a mom and will be greatly missed by Michelle. Rose is survived by her daughter, Michelle Smart of Lee; her mother, Regina Kocur of Orono; two sisters, Donna Gail Cowan and her husband, Lester, of Orono, and Anne Osolinski and her husband, Basil, of Clinton; nieces and nephews, Alston Muir III of Clinton, Aja Matthews and Lance Cowan, both of Orono; her fiance, Roger Walton; uncles and aunts, Alex Manzo and Izzy of Florida, Albert Manzo and Ella of Portland, Roger Manzo and Joanne of Saco, and Michael Manzo of Massachusetts; and many, many cousins. She was predeceased by her father, John Kocur Jr. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church of Lincoln, with the Rev. Darrell Joiner officiating. Interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, at the request of her sisters, donations in her memory may be made to a trust fund for the benefit of Michelle, care of Martha Broderick, Esq., P.O. Box 554, Lincoln, ME 04457. I was stunned this weekend to learn of Rose's passing. I remember playing with her on Gilbert Street when we were kids. She was my next door neighbor and we used to play with dolls out in the field behind our houses. She was such an easy going friend. My love goes out to her Mom and two sisters, Ann and Donna.

I was stunned when I heard about losing Rose. She was such a beautiful person...so kind and caring. I will miss her sweet smile and happy disposition. I spent a great deal of time talking with her at our 25th reunion and it was if no time had passed at all. She will be greatly missed not only by me but by all of the Orono High graduates of 1978. Our hearts go out to all of those close to her. She was very special to us all.

Rose lives on vivaciously in death as much as she did in life, having shaped and formed clients, colleagues, students, and friends who cannot help but to forever reflect her personality and impact to her generation and beyond. We love you Rose, and will never stop missing you. Alan and Karen Algee

Michelle, I am proud to have known and shared some great times with your Mom. She loved you with all her heart, loved life, and especially loved to smile. Her laughter was contagous, and if you shared special times with her, you were in for a joyous ride. She & I went on a retreat together in Augusta many years ago. On the schedule for the weekend were many hillarious events, such as me dying Rose's hair red for the first time. It came out quite orange, as well as her skin around her face. We laughed until we cried when she saw her hair in the mirror for the first time. I think we went through a whole bottle of shampoo before the color faded. At midnight, we were craving something sweet, and were not suppose to leave the Retreat House after 10:00 p.m. Did we abide by the house rules and go to bed? Think about it! Rose dragged me out for ice cream in our pajamas. We put a shoe in the side door, so we could sneak back in, as the doors would be locked. Around 1:00 a.m., we crept up to the door, tip-toed down the hall, trying to restrain our uncontrollable laughter. We felt like school kids again. That is how I want to remember this great lady. Having fun, laughing, and bringing joy to everyone she met.
Love to you and your family.

Your cheerful, warm and tender heart has touched my soul. Multitudes of broken souls were mended by your special touch. You were one of a kind, always excited about recovery, life, and living... and, mostly, it seemed, your little girl. Michelle was one lucky lass to have known your love, and I pray that she knows you will always be with her in spirit. May the Heavens Cherish and Enjoy You As Much As We Here on Earth Have.

It's been a pleasure, Rose.

Love you always, Rebekka Freeman, Swan Lake, ME

Our hearts go out to Rose's family, especially to Michelle. Although we know Rose is in a better place, it is so very hard to share the ones we love. Jordyn and I worked with her through Toys for Tots. She dedicated a lot of time to this program. Rose was a knowledgeable and valuable community service provider for many years. She will be sadly missed. She was a truly special person. Our prayers go out to you all.

Rose made a difference in people's lives. She smiled easily, laughed heartily, and took the opportunity to serve seriously. Would that we all could leave that legacy. We will miss her.
