Rose Strickland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16, 2023.
We are heartbroken to announce the death of our mother, Rose Strickland, on 2/11/23 at the age of 83. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her children, and in the care of Calvary Hospice. Among her family, universe of friends and colleagues and her cherished Prospect-Lefferts Manor, Brooklyn community, she was a much-loved presence.

Rose Stokes was born on September 21, 1939, in Harlem to Isabella Boykin and William Henry Stokes. She was raised in Clinton, NC. After graduating from Sampson High School in Clinton, Rose followed the path of the "Great Migration" northward to New York City (as did many in her family) and enrolled at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Hoboken, NJ, graduating in January 1962 (her firstborn learned to read using her textbooks!). After graduating she began a long nursing career that spanned decades in both patient care and management, and developed many lifetime friendships. Jacobi Hospital, Albert Einstein Hospital, White Plains Hospital, and Visiting Nurse Service of Westchester are a few of the institutions to benefit from her no-nonsense, ethical, and empathetic approach. Rose briefly worked as Vice President of Westchester-Putnam Affirmative Action after attaining her Bachelor's Degree at Mercy College in 1980, and while working towards her Master's Degree at Pace University. However, she returned to nursing at Montefiore Hospital, which was always her preferred profession. She retired in 2003 at age 64, and began the richest phase of her life, enjoying a full social schedule that included visiting with family and friends and traveling extensively. She visited much of the US, Central & South America, the Caribbean, a wide swath of Europe, Morocco, South Africa, and Thailand.

Rose will be remembered for her devotion to her children, dedication to extended family and friends, her love of art, music, dancing, wonderful cooking, timeless style, daily walks around the community and Prospect Park, hosting family and holiday events, and involvement with community affairs. She was a newshound and an avid reader, and took classes in painting and sculpture, creating several wonderful, cherished art pieces. She remained committed to her alumni association for Sampson High School, provided guidance for the Boykin Family Reunion and faithfully maintained and supported her many friend circles.

Rose married Jasper Strickland on January 15, 1960. From this union, three children were born - David, Dori, and Deborah. Rose was predeceased by her beloved parents, adored brother William Stokes, a cousin who was a fourth sister to the family, Loretta Sue Ashford, and a host of other relatives. She is survived by her children, David Strickland, Dori Vuksanovic (Joseph), and Deborah Strickland, her sisters Bettye Stokes Ingram and Vera Stokes Johnson, and a multitude of extended family members and friends.

As per Rose's request, no funeral will be held. Contributions in Rose's memory can be made online to Equal Justice Initiative, Doctors Without Borders, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. These groups' missions aligned with her core principles, and she provided financial support to them for many years. Please reference email [email protected] when making a contribution.

My dear beautiful friend Rose was an extraordinary woman; intelligent, honest, reliable, and dependable. I will always remember her attention to family and friends with genuine loving care; Rose was a role model for "excellence".
My heartfelt condolences to David, Debbie, and Dori.
We will all miss you forever.

I met Rose through David, her son, but truthfully could have mistaken her for his elder sister, her smile, her style and her energy belied her age. Over the time I was part of the Strickland family we had many opportunities to bond, over food, art, music and travel. I have many memories that will remain with me. And though I have not been much in contact with the family I send my condolences to Vera, Betty, Dori, Debbie, David, Joseph and those I never had the opportunity to know. Rose, may your journey be peaceful and light.

Debbie, Dori and David, and to all of the family and friends who loved my cousin Rose. I wish you peace now and in the days ahead. It was always a joy to be in her presence. Rose always had some some family history events and stories to share that reminded us of our past and how we shared the good times together. I will miss her contagious smile and the love she always showed for her family and those around her. She was the light in the room. Rest in peace cousin. Love you forever.

My deepest sympathy to the family and my brother from another mother, David, whom I have known for over 50 years. We are both fortunate to have had our mothers for as long as we did to advise, guide and always love us unconditionally. God bless you all.

I first met Rose as a new graduate at Jacobi Hospital in 1964.She became my role model of what I wanted to become as a nurse, we also became friends and had many good times together.
She was most generous in helping me with her wisdom.
We lost touch but reconnected during the pandemic and I felt as if it was yesterday.
My deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Rose will be missed by all who knew her.

I met Rose more than 10 years ago and from that moment I have felt part of her family.
She has always been close to me and David, without been intrusive. One of the sweetest memory I have, is about Rose cooking fried chicken for me. She knew how much I like this plate and every time I was in New York she cooked it for me.
We used to laugh and I´m so happy to say that I was able to make her laugh, especially during our dinners together.
She has had a tough but full life, being able to face and pass through difficulties, but enjoying every moment, even the hardest, always with a wide open heart.
Be in peace dear Rose: I hope you´re now travelling all over the universe and cooking fried chicken for your beloved people you have found in the sky.

Rose was truly a rose ! I met her through her friendship with Wanling VANN and quickly became a friend in my own right ....we shared many conversations about NC as I lived there for 20 years ....I enjoyed meeting up with Wanling and Louise and going out for some good food .Rose was an expert on great culinary foods and loved bringing her leftovers to her son ... I will miss our discussions and fun times together .....All of my blessings and good thoughts go out to you ,her children ,family and friends

David, I remember your mother's ready smile as she greeted passersby. She was always so full of life during the tour of houses and easily reached out to newcomers to the neighborhood. She will be missed by so many. Take hope that you and family have many wonderful memories of her. She has fought a good fight. May she Rest In Peace..

Rose was very inspiring. She didn´t let her age stop her from finding love, traveling and learning. From the moment I met her in 2019, I knew she was special. Thinking about her makes me smile. May she Rest In Peace b

As Dori has said, Rose was "Mother of all who needed one" (MOAWNO)

She was always there to answer any questions you might have. Rose was the most elegant and caring woman I have ever known. Rose will be missed but not forgotten. Love you forever.
