I inherited her passion for making a positive difference in all communities. The only person that got me in that aspect.

It is with both heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we come together to honor the thirty-one years of sisterhood we shared with our beloved Roxy. Her presence brought light and joy into our lives, and her absence will be keenly felt. While we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing that she is now in a better place, watching over us with love and grace. Roxy's legacy of kindness and friendship will forever be cherished in our hearts. Let us remember her with fondness and celebrate the beautiful bond we were fortunate to share for over three decades. In Loving Memory of Roxy Deann Hall Williamson. I met her while doing an event at the Galveston Art in Action on July 1, 2023. She was sweet, informative, and passionate about Galveston history and culture. I'm sad to have not spent more time. May her legacy live on and may her loved ones keep her memory alive; I know I will. - KB Brookins

I met Roxy on a zoom full of activists from around the state. She was fearless and brave and strong then and again on many other zoom events. Her voice and spirit always made me smile and gave me hope and strength. At 73, I have, regretfully, only fairly recently learned to shut up and listen when Black women speak. Roxy was a huge reason that has become my mantra. Love you Roxy. Peace and Love. RIP

A letter to Roxy:

You will be here, but only for a moment, because you will mostly be in that place we have so far only experienced in our collective minds. The place of liberation where you have your bookstore below your Freedom House. The one you´ve been building your whole life. A place where you can lay down your arms, there´s no longer a need for battles of the bodies, either of the flesh or the legislative. There´s no one else for you to register to vote, and there are no more twisted bills for you to push back on. You have already done more than enough. You have always been more than enough.

You will be there in that moment when someone from the Wright Cuny neighborhood you showed us to canvass in votes for the first time. You will see their empowerment and then return to your Freedom House to rest and dance in celebration of what you left behind.

You will be there when that someone´s child grows up to run for office or teach or become a doctor. You will see their satisfied smile of accomplishment and know you can share it.

You will be there for a future tour of the Juneteenth Art Museum/Nia Cultural Center, the one you shared with so many. You will listen in on the history shared there. You´ll see the way those paintings move people and spark change. Then you will return to your Freedom House, where you are surrounded by all the art, all the love that comes through a careful mix of colors, shapes, and lines to share a message, a feeling, or a reminder.

You will be there the next time I´m in Galveston drenched in sweat and need a ride from you and your mom where I then also get a historic tour and tales of growing up on the island. You will know that you belong on all the beaches, no matter what they had done before with their sick segregation. I will wave to you from the car, there´s no need to stay this time.

You will be with me every time I eat at Nesha or Aster´s in Austin or any restaurant in Galveston. That was the best pakora, wasn´t it? You can return to enjoy more in your Freedom House.

You will be with me for every long drive listening to an inspiring book like How We Can Win. You will have a poster in your Freedom House that says, "We Won." It will hang next to your Juneteenth flag, just like the one you gifted me.

In many ways, you will be with us for every step of the work ahead, but you´ve already done so much more than your part. So join us, just for these moments, and see how we carry forward your legacy. Know that we are doing this for you, for the future, and for all of us. Everyone who has had the gift of meeting you is stronger, wiser, and more joyful because of it.

On your path to releasing the pain of this body, know that you are leaving a trail of buzzing, blooming flowers-the singing sunflowers, the cheery bursts of wild lantana, and the dandelions filled with wishes ready to float into the bay. A trail that has already led so many to embark on and connect with others. With the inspiration you provided, we´re building our own paths, ones that go further and wider than we could have imagined before we met you.

Thank you for helping each of us be part of building a bigger Freedom House here in this place. Now, you can go and rest, smile, and sing in the one that´s ready for you.

Love you, sis. Rest in peace and all your power.

Lauren

I initially met Roxy during my freshman year at SSC now U. She was so friendly, fun and loving. We always greeted each other with laughs thereafter. Later we became sorority sisters after pledging together in 1993. Thanks to social media, we reunited while losing contact while sueviving life. We would chat, encourage, cry and laugh. We always ended with I love you. She taught me that because we never know when the roll is called. I am going to miss her but remember my sister. Fly high Soror!!! You were definitely an eagle.

Roxy was so full of passion, well traveled & excellent at writing! I will miss her laughter, political debates, stories of college days at Savannah State University & her energy! She was not afraid to live life out loud! She handled adversity well & turned lemons into lemonade! I pray for Roxy to have peace in eternity!

Roxy was faith over fear. She was the calm in the storm. She was steadfast through adversity. Her zest for life was unparalleled. Her eye was always on the prize. Not a prize for her but a prize for humanity. She blazed a path of equality creating positive change for all future generations. I will treasure all our moments...swimming in the ocean on a beautiful sunny day... Dancing to DNice during covid...sharing philosophy over food but my most precious moments with Roxy will always be on the patio of the house we called 906. Sitting on the porch discussing live..politics and of course how to cultivate water and grow the seed of change. Roxy will always be a part of the fiber of my being...the part that she enlightened, expanded and forever altered. #islandtribe

I met Roxy through GO2 for Lung Cancer's Voices Summit. She and I were in a group to speak to our members of Congress. Roxy was strong, fierce, passionate, and knew what she wanted. We were strangers when we met, but when we left the conference, I was "her girl." I am heartbroken to hear of her passing. She lit up a room and made you feel like you were a long-lost friend. Her smile and laugh were deeply infectious! Her absence will be and is being felt so deeply by all who knew her. I pray for peace and comfort for those close to her.

Thank you for loving her and protecting her and raising her as your very own! I love you and really appreciate all that you did for her! I pray that The Lord comforts your entire family especially Zaire and Mr James! I pray that they find comfort in knowing that you are in a place where there is no pain and every tear is wiped away and your soul will rest in peace for eternity!!

We loved Roxy at GO2. She was a strong advocate for lung cancer and we can not thank her enough for lending her voice to bring awareness to this dreadful disease. Because of Roxy many will know more about the necessity of being screened and tested. She marched gallantly through the halls of Congress advocating for herself and her peers that laws be changed and funds be delegated to help those in need. She lent her face, her story and her name so that others might have a better chance at surviving. Thank you Roxy for your smile, your positive energy and all the good you brought to the world.

Roxy came to The Bahamas on a cruise in November 2021. He friend who was Celebrating her birthday missed the cruise so Roxy came alone. I took the day off to spend with her and to show her my beautiful country. She did some souvenir shopping then insisted on going on the beach even though it was a bit cool. I took her to Paradise Island and she went in the chilly water and convinced me to go in as well promising it will ease my knee pain due to a torn meniscus. I believe it worked for a few weeks. But we had a beautiful time talking about politics and our time at Savannah State. It was my last time seeing my amazing friend as she became ill just a few months after she left. But we communicated often up until just a few weeks before her transition. What a beautiful, positive and brave worrior. I love you my dear and precious friend. No more pain!

My memories of Roxy goes back a long way. Her mother and I were friends.

She was a truly brilliant, intelligent, and energetic young woman. She believed in many causes and knew how to approach the opponent to address her issues.

She will always be my daughter from another mother.

May her parents, daughter, siblings, and others find complete rest, comfort, and peace in our Lord and Savior.
