I spent many years working with Roy and in friendly competition with him. He was a wise and principled man, gentle in a world at times filled with chaos and the occasional high elbows. I am deeply saddened by his loss but mostly would like to express my sadness for those who loved him most and have been denied his company too soon. May each of you - all of you - be comforted in your grief and one day, find solace in the truth that you were blessed by the company and loved by a wonderful man.

Roy and I worked very closely together for many years at the Calgary Sun. He was unfailingly decent, kind, gentle, hardworking and so very talented. He had such a lovely way with words. He also had a very subtle sense of humour that would leave me gaffawing. Roy was class all the way. The last time I spoke with him in January he was boasting in his humble way about Anna and Katie. He was so very proud of all his lovely girls, including Sue. My deepest condolences to Roy's family. He will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace dear friend.

I worked with Roy for years, my messy desk right beside his tidy one. He was the most patient fella who was always supportive and albeit quiet had tonnes of time to talk and lots to say. In recent months I ran into Roy quite a bit at the dog part with his awesome chocolate lab, a fit and healthy fella who was oh, so demanding Roy chuck his ball. One say Roy said he figured his dog didn't want the ball so much as he wanted his owner's attention all to himself. One walk, Roy and I got to talking about all sorts of things, life, newspapers, his daughter's wedding, fights back in the day in Winnipeg. We both had more to say and met up a few days later. My dog had a bad leg and wasn't able to go to the dog park. I figured I would go anyhow just to chat. And I can't tell you how glad I did. Roy sent me a note recently just asking about my dog and wishing me all the best. I can't believe that was only a few months back. What a rip-off, Roy was just a gentle, kind soul and I'm so glad to have known him. My condolences to his family and friends and I know his kindred canine pal will also be lost without his dedicated pal.
