Roy Cooper, a Hall of Fame rodeo legend known as Super Looper, died April 29, 2025, in a house fire at his home in Decatur, Texas at the age of 69.
In some ways, Cooper was an unlikely rodeo hero. As a youth, horse hair caused his asthma to flare up. He threw himself into it anyway, and by high school he was competing in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Cooper's pro career ended up being a series of broken records and major milestones. He was the highest ever earning rookie his first year as a pro, won three consecutive Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) tie-down titles (and won four overall), won the PRCA All-Around World Title in 1983, and was even in the inaugural ProRodeo Hall of Fame class of 1979. By 1990, he was the PRCA's all-time leading money winner. He only slowed down in the 1990s due to a series of injuries, and even then, he continued to win titles. He still remained at or near the top of the earnings charts, and he cemented himself as one of the best in the sport's history. Cooper is in the ProRodeo, Rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Texas Cowboy, Texas Rodeo, and Oklahoma Sports halls of fame, among others.
Family, friends and fans offered tribute to Cooper on social media. "Roy wasn't just a legend in the arena-he was a legend in life. He inspired so many with his strength, grit, and heart. Whether you knew him personally or admired him from afar, you knew he was someone special. His love for rodeo, family, and friends ran deep, and he carried that love with quiet pride and unmatched character," Kathryn Elaine Snedeker said on Facebook. "Our hearts are broken. The world feels a little dimmer without his presence in it."

He was the best! I was 16 and he was 20 and I was walking by him at Houston in the parking lot. I nodded and said how are you doing? He then told me all about his recent rodeo runs.

My name is Randy Vaughn, I had the privilege of knowing my good friend since 1975, I shared this story with Roy and the family at his 70th birthday get together back on November 13th
I had been hearing of this young gun calf roper from NM who was going to be the next big deal, I was looking forward to getting to see him rope, the first time I saw him and met him was at a small open rodeo in Muenster Tx that winter, he showed up with his college buddies at the event, I told how I watched him run that calf for the first time and he had a good go, but went out there and missed one to win something for no reason, I told Roy at his birthday gathering, that the first time I watched him run one I wasn´t impressed at all, but now the second time I watched him run one and every other time after tgst I was greatly impressed
It was great to be able see his career and how he revolutionized the event, with all his succeeds it would have been easy and understandable for him to get caught up in it in a manner that could change who he was raised to be
While I was impressed by his talent and skill, I was more impressed he remained true to his raising by two loving parents and siblings
Going to miss seeing my friend, but will see him again someday, as I know he had a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus

My name is Terry Davis. I met Roy when 12 and I was 14. I worked on ABC Ranch, for John Sharp. Roys Dad, Mr. Tuffy Cooper, would bring mares to be bred to stud horses owned by R.E. Josey. Roy and I became real good friends. I went work in the oilfield at 18.We would always talk by phone through the years. I saw him at the Astrodome in 1980, where he roped, and won , of course! I worked overseas the last 30 years.I came home in 2009 and retired after 17 years in Kuwait. Roy was the best tie down roper that ever lived. I just talked to him at home on Monday, before he died on Tuesday. He was a good friend and will be missed., my friend. I will see you again one day

I have a training video of Roy and his horse Charlie that made all the difference in the world for me in my perfect practice to be a better team roper. That was in 1983 over 40 years ago. Roy was a great influence on the roping world in general. Thanks Roy for all the help you weren't aware you gave people through sharing your knowledge. Rest in peace. Thanks again for everything.

As a young man Roy inspired many of us.I grew up in Cisco TX in the 70S When Roy was at Cisco Jr College we would hang out at the Arena and pens at night and admire the older Cowboy Rodeo Group.Roy was allways ready with a quick word of Humor and Insperation. Over the years i have watched Roy grow into the Legend HE and his group built and became.Roy allways had a vision of being number 1 in the arena and he achieved it.We all have our trials here on earth but to be able to leave a legacy of insperation to a future Generation is as great an honor A man can do with his life.Loop on with your friends in Heaven REST IN PEACE my friend.Prayers For PEACE and LOVE to the COOPER FAMILY.

Roy Cooper was a very good friend to me when he lived in Durant, Ok. He was going to college and Roping nearly every day. I would give him tides to the air port in Dallas, and one think I remember. He could eat a wendy's Hamburger, almost as fast as he could tie a calf. He and I had some great times together in Oklahoma city at the NFR.I will Miss Him and all his cool remarks. RIP BROTHER.

I had the honor of meeting you Mr. Cooper and your family at you and my father's induction into the Oklahoma Sports Hall Of Fame in 2014. My father and I would watch you on TV back in the 1970's together. You were a true Cowboy!!! You put roping on the map, and surely paid your dues to do so. Your induction speech told pretty much the whole story Haha!!! And none of us there that night cared you went way over your speech time. Lol!!!
All of my love and prayers to your family and friends. And thank you for making my father's induction night so memorable. You're one of the first faces that pops in my head, every time I think of that day and evening. And I still wish I could've worn my jeans, boots, dress coat, and cowboy hat like you did, instead of that tux I had to wear. Lol!!!
Thank you for all the love and good times that weekend, with you and your family and friends. What a night to remember.
OneLove,
Trent Tucker
P.S. I'm sure you and my father are both laughing right now together. I'll be there when "He" decides it's my time to join y'all again.

Where's the best place to eat here he asked. We said we were from Oregon and he said great help you are! Then he said okay you two let's go find a good place, what's your two's names? When I was in high school rodeo, everybody wanted to ride roughstock. I got hurt riding a bull and decided that wasn´t for me. I went to a rodeo and watched him set that arena on fire with his presence. That made me want to do calf roping. I got a horse and started roping in high school. They say to never meet your heroes, because they will let you down. They couldn´t have been more wrong. I met him twice while roping at the college level. Both times he shook my hand and gave me that big Texas grin. He stood there and visited with me, like we were old friends and he had nowhere else to go. A true peoples champion.
The world lost a true legend this week. And his presence on earth will definitely be missed.
