Roy Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2025.
Roy Davis Moore, Sr., age 78, passed away peacefully on Mother's Day, 2025, surrounded by love and life fully lived. Born August 7, 1946, to William Thomas Moore and Mary Shaw Moore, the youngest of eight: William "Bebo" Moore, Margaret Moore Laski, Melvin "Dinky" Moore, Bobby Moore, Benny Moore, Carol Moore Proctor, and Levy Moore.

As a child, Roy was the spark of the neighborhood--the kid who riled up the bigger boys before darting up under the house, laughing defiantly, out of their reach. He attended Tarboro High School, graduating with the Class of 1964.

In the 1960's, Roy served honorably in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany--he always loved his country. After returning home, he continued his life of service in the Raleigh Police Department, from March 23, 1970 to February 1, 1995.

If you knew him, you knew his opinions about many things. If he knew you, you knew his opinions about almost everything; he told it like it was, never sugarcoated the truth, and always spoke from his heart. He loved his home state, especially his Tar Heels. It is hard to say whether he cheered louder from his seat in the stadium or from his La-Z-Boy recliner at home.

Roy was married to Dale Kornegay Moore for 53 years, and a proud father to Roy Jr. and Stephen Moore and his wife Candace Moore. He was a coach, a friend, and a man deeply rooted in church. Many remember him from church softball, coaching and playing with contagious enthusiasm and a sense of humor. He was a pretty good player, too.

Roy served others in many ways; one unique way was washing and detailing cars for widows in the church and his neighborhood. He turned his music up loud and took his time with the work. He loved working outside. He did it with such care and excellence that even able bodied men began to line up for a spot in his driveway. His generosity, wrapped in soap, sunshine, and sixties music, was his ministry in motion.

Roy and Dale moved their family to Cary, North Carolina and was a faithful attender of Capital Church in Garner and Peak City Church in Apex. His faith showed in the way he lived and loved, as well as the way he served others.

Before he passed, his wife Dale lovingly reminded him, "Your mama is is going to be right there to hug you." Fittingly, on Mother's Day, in the presence of Jesus, he found his way home to her embrace.

Roy D. Moore, Sr. will be deeply missed and remembered forever by his family, his church community and the many friends blessed to know him. His legacy of laughter, service and steadfast love lives on in the lives he touched.

A celebration of Roy's life will be held on May 23rd at The Capital Church 1308 Highway 70W, Garner, NC 27529 at 2:00 pm, followed by visitation with the family. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Roy's memory by doing something kind for someone--perhaps washing a neighbor's car with the music turned up for the whole block to hear.

Rest easy, Roy. You ran your race well.

Roy was a great coworker, at RPD and off-duty jobs. Always ready to assist with whatever we were dealing with, and good for a laugh. Rest in peace brother.

Dale, Roy, Jr., and Stephen (and Levy, the only of Roy's siblings I know):

I'm grieved to hear that Roy, Sr. has departed this world because I know your hearts are hurting. I also know that his presence in Heaven gives you immeasurable comfort and makes that Place -- our ultimate and actual Home -- more real than you ever imagined. I have cherished memories of Roy, and I consider myself blessed to have known him. He will not be forgotten. I will be praying for you all in the journey ahead, and I will do something kind for someone, although I can assure you that no one would want me to wash their car! Love to all of you.

R.D.Moore was a good guy. We met as members of the Raleigh Police Department and became friends quickly. I valued his friendship very much. He joked with everybody and made fun of me relentlessly.

Roy, You were a special first cousin that grew up in the Runnymede neighborhood. I was a little older but I believe most of the stories that were told about you. You were a unique individual. May God bless you and your family. You will certainly be missed.

I have known the Moore Family for many years and they are still part of my life. I remember Roy as a father to Stephen and Roy Jr as a sign of living as a Godly example of discipline and hard work. His biggest influence to me came as a basketball coach in the 90's. As he coached what Tim King referred to as the Iron Man game. Roy coached our team of 5 players to victory over a full team of 10. He will be missed.
