Roy Andrew Peratrovich

You will always be remembered. Gunalchéesh. Thank you always for the encouragement and for being a true human being. I wrote a longer piece but it did not appear. My love always to the family.

I just learned today of Roy's passing from his obituary posted on the PND web page. Life is different without reading a newspaper. A person's life is like a long tapestry, you only know portions of it. Most of what I know about Roy as a person was from reading this web page. I was one of Roy's employees at both firms, PND and Peratrovich Consultants from Sept 1981 to March 1983. Toby his wife was one of my coworkers. Roy was successful in many important areas of life. A few days I drove by a successful timber pedestrian bridge at 36th and Muldoon built around 1984. I built a scale HO model out of balsa wood of his design and his late partner Dennis took an outdoor photo of it in the sunshine and it appeared like a real bridge. They used the photo to sell the Municipality of Anchorage. I assisted Roy in the design of the Tatitlek Alaska school and a salmon fish hatchery for the BIA [Bureau of Indian Affairs]. My late father succumbed to Parkinson's disease. Betsy posted a picture of Roy on the innovated basket handle arch steel bridge river crossing for trans-Alaska pipeline. Roy overcame many hardships to make the world a better place as an engineer and as a loving positive person.

I had one conversation with Roy, and his generosity, kindness, and sense of humor left an indelible mark on me. I was hired at PND Engineers, Inc. in 2018. I was writing a historical perspective about the company he co-founded in 1979 for PND's 40th anniversary. I interviewed Roy in spring 2019; he spoke to me for an hour over the phone despite the difficulties his advancing Parkinson's wreaked on his voice. Even through all that, Roy was an absolutely brilliant storyteller. He loved telling stories about PND, and he loved telling stories about his dear friend and fellow co-founder Dennis Nottingham. I am so grateful for that conversation, and I cherish that relationship for what it was.

Roy was perhaps the most important business friend in my life. I first meet him when he came to my office to inquire about setting up an insurance company for Alaskan Architects and Engineers. That didn't materialize, but I was able to bring an insurer into Alaska to meet their needs until Architect and Engineers Insurance Company was founded. Peratrovich Nottingham and Drage (PND) was policy holder number 1. I spent many enjoyable hours with both Roy and Toby.

I lived down the street from the Peratrovich family and I remember that dollhouse- it was amazing!

I first met Roy around Christmas 1980, just one month after starting at Peratrovich and Nottingham. We had a three room office off of international airport road in anchorage. Roy and Dennis were visiting in our small conference room and and I was invited to join them for a beer. I had stashed a bottle of bourbon in my desk when I first moved into the office. When the beer ran out it was clear the mood to have another was shared by all. I risked making a bad impression so early in my career but I went to my desk and brought out the bottle and tossed the cap and we had a wonderful bonding Friday evening. Roy couldn´t have been a better mentor and friend. Will remember you forever.

We were neighbors of Roy and Toby on Bainbridge Island for many years. We had the best time and the most wonderful parties. Any excuse to get together and eat, laugh and drink! We miss those days and Roy will forever be in our hearts. We pray for Toby and the family. He will truly be missed.
