Rual Yarbrough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2010.
Rual Yarbrough, 80, passed away early Tuesday morning in Florence. Known and beloved by many, Rual was ranked among the finest bluegrass musicians in the world. He played banjo and sang on dozens of albums, including many of his own, and also was well respected for his talent in building and repairing instruments. Virtually every musician in the Shoals area has been influenced in some way by him. As a family friend so accurately put it, "Everyone who has ever picked up a stringed instrument has lost a great man." The family rests in the assurance that he is worshipping his Lord with some awesome bluegrass right now.
Far greater than his passion for music was his passion for Christ, which Rual was eager to share with all those he knew. One of his favorite songs, "You've Got to Put Jesus First," also was the motto that he repeated often and tried to live by. His kindness and compassion touched the lives of too many to count, and his family was his top priority.
Rual was preceded in death by his parents, Ottis and Myrtle Yarbrough, and his brother, Thomas Edwin Yarbrough. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Zora Jean Yarbrough; daughters, Kathy Brazelton (Joe) and Janet Kirk (Tony); stepdaughter, Julie York; grandchildren, Amy Brazelton Little (Matthew) and Anna Beth Kirk Rose (Matthew), William Kirk, Jonathan, Jennifer and Jeanabeth York; sisters, Jean Tate and Ruth Johnson (Bill); brother, Adrian Yarbrough (Sandra); great-granddaughter, Maggie Little; and first wife and mother of his children, Mabeth Jones.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday at Colbert Memorial Chapel, with funeral services immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, Rual's wish was that donations be made to his favorite charities, Salvation Army and Feed the Children.

To Jean and Julie and the entire Yarbrough family,

I had heard wonderful things about Rual Yarbrough growing up in Killen from musically inclined family and friends but I didn't have a chance to meet Rual until later in life when I walked into a Barber shop in Sheffield and asked this new barber what he had in that banjo case. After that I looked forward to getting a haircut and listening to Rual talk about Bluegrass, Banjos and Musicians in general. It was my good fortune to know Rual and I will be thinking of him when my children are enjoying the instruments he worked on for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Rual came into my life at a very early age after the death of my father when I was 2 years old. Rual became my step-father, and no man in my life ever treated me better than he did. Rual you will always be in my heart forever. Miss you!

I met Rual in 1972 and it seems I lived at his store (like hundreds of other players did) in Muscle Shoals until he finally moved it. Bought my first decent banjo from him and still have it. He was a great man and anyone who knew him is better for it. He is truly missed..

I always enjoyed any time I spent with Rual, talking banjos, picking banjos, listening to banjo pickers. He always had time for any one with questions or needing help. A true Southern Gentleman who made this world a better place and will be missed greatly by so many people. My thoughts are with you folks and your loss. Peace

Kathy & Janet,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Your entire family is in my prayers. You may not remember me but I lived at Powell & was a friend of JoAnn's. I can remember us visiting your parent's & we would play while the grown ups talked. God Bless all of you.
