Manny, fourteen years? I just can’t believe it has been that long. You’re in my thoughts almost daily! This world would be a whole lot better place if you and more people like you were still roaming around. Love and miss you friend! Rest in Peace

Finally, hair!

Still think about you every day Manny. A couple of weeks ago Ilene and I flew to Chicago for Kellan's wedding. You would have been so very proud. Saw lots of friends we had not seen in a while. Randy and Rosey, Steve and Sally, Kellan and Jeff (and Jeff's wife) on and on. Many Manny stories circulating among the crowd. The wedding was so beautiful. Miss you Brother.

Too long since I jotted down a note here. It has been 4 years now and all I have are good memories that make me smile. Burning eggs on your stovetop. Chicken bones in some lady's purse. Cruising with Manny and TZ….TWICE. Trips to Montana. Trips to Idaho. Trips to Seattle. Trips to New Orleans and all points north. Too many officiated football games to count. Well pick mah nose. TZ wrote something on your Facebook wall yesterday that resonated deeply. We are all so grateful to have known you; as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend. I love you Manny. Always did, always will. I will never forget your commitment to friendship, your infectious smile, your toilet habits. Whenever I think of Ruben the Cuban, I smile. Big. Miss you brother.

Hey Ruben. Just a quick note to remind you that I think about you every day. TZ, Jeff and Kellan are doing well. I talk with the boys every now and then via Facebook, but that TZ is SO DAMN BUSY she is hard to track down. Actually, she is doing so well. Saw her this summer in Missoula and she looks great. This whole thing is still kind of a dream, but I have come to grips with it. Still miss you and still love you. In fact, I love you like a fat kid loves cake. Now that sounds like something someone from Louisiana would say. Guess I must have picked it up when we all came down there to see all y'all. Love you Manny.

September 6, 2011

Dearest Man, Today is the one year anniversary of your Louisiana memorial service. I know you were proud and embarrassed at the great number of people who came to say farewell. You did enjoy being the center of attention sometimes, but on your own terms. The year has passed. I have never stopped loving you and missing you, but I have found a way to see the joy in many days.... remembering you is almost always a joyful thing. Watching our boys grow and learn thru their pain has been rewarding... I know you are so proud watching them pick themselves up
and dust themselves off, always ready for the next quarter, whether it ends in a win, loss or tie. All three of your sons are amazing in their devotion to you and your ideals. You set such a good and consistent example every day, they have no confusion about what you expect of them now. That provides great comfort for us all. I remember when I first met you, you made me want to be a better person. Even now that you are away, I still want you to be proud of me. I hope so much that you know I am trying to do the right thing, trying hard to live up to your legacy of plain old goodness and kindness. I have a lot of support from Sally and Steve, Steve and Ilene, Fred and Addie Jo, all the boys (MEN!) and the many friends and family who stick by me because of their continuing love for the 'US' that we made together. I have no idea what the next year will hold, but I know I can face it with you in my heart. I can't help wishing you were in my arms, as well. Yours always T

September 3, 2011

Oh my goodness Manny. I never thought we could go an entire year without you in our lives. We miss you so much and think about you daily if not hourly. But we do have to live on...that's what you would want. I know you are sitting up there so proud of Teresa for finding the strength to make the right decisions even though there are days that she really didn't even want to get out of bed. She loves you soooooo much and always will. Kellan and Jeff are your amazing legacies to you and your great parenting. Who would have thought that these two goofballs would succeed like they are...Kellan already making a living at his passion and Jeffrey soon to graduate with two majors and a minor! What a tribute to you! Today, Jeff is down cheering for LSU with Uncle Steve...no one but you could get Steve to be an LSU (Learn Slower than Usual) fan. Kellan is in Natchohoweveryouspellthatcrazyname with Teresa. All of us support each other as much as we can, loving each other, talking daily, taking strength from not only each other but Steve and Ilene, Katie, Bev, Addie Jo and Fred, everyone that loved you now loves each other for and through you. So...no more worrying about us...we will be fine. We will never forget you, never stop loving you. Rest in peace, knowing that there will always be a Manny shaped hole in our hearts but learning each day how to go on without you Rest in Peace and continue to watch over us. We love you Uncle Manny!

Steve

September 3, 2011

It has been a year now Manny. Time has helped heal some of the hurt that occurred when you were taken from us so very early, but I suspect that hurt will never totally go away. You were a rock; a stalwart titan of a man. A man we will never forget. What do I miss? Those silly, unbelievably funny voice messages you would always leave us, claiming you were Billy Joe Bob from somewhere in Louisiana, trying to sell us some insurance. I miss watching you around kids; kids of all ages would flock to you like you were a magnet. I miss the smile you put on everyone's faces. I miss talking to you on the phone. I miss being around you at large gatherings, where everything was just a little more fun when Ruben the Cuban was around. I just plain miss you. I think TZ and the boys are doing OK, but I know they miss you more than anyone else. I watch the video that Katie Seidenschwarz made for your memorial service on a regular basis. During it I smile a lot, but there are some tears as well. Some of happiness, bringing back wonderful memories, some of sadness that you are no longer with us. I love and miss you a lot, my good friend. I am almost moe dan sho.

Hey Ruben. Just got back from MT a week ago. Teresa came up to the lake and visited us for a couple of days. She looks GREAT. She misses you like the dickens but is doing really well. I can't tell you how many people love the heck out of her. We will all take care of her and the boys. One of the drawbacks in seeing TZ is that it obviously makes me miss you. LOTS! The picture I posted here I borrowed from Jeff; one from your army days. You look so young. Love and miss you a lot my friend.

Hi Uncle Manny.... miss you so much. Thought about you and the boys and Aunt TC on father's day... You were just the best.

I got the hiccups yesterday, and thought about how you are the only one who could ever cure them! I wish you were here to magically make them go away. Miss and love you a lot!!

Happy Father's Day Manny. Miss you a lot. Probably not as much as TZ and the boys, but A LOT. Love you brother.

Dear Teresa, Kellan and Jeff,

Our family had the good fortune to meet Manny at one of our many Rosenthal/Canepa family gatherings. It was a BBQ after Chelsea's High School graduation in our yard, in May, in the afternoon. Well, the sun leaves our yard pretty early anyway, and as I said it was May, in the mountains, so there we all sat in our lawn chairs playing charades, in our winter parkas! Manny and Theresa had been through alot in their lives at this point, but what I saw were two beautiful people loving and living life to its fullest, with grace and humor. Manny was such a big teddy bear and bigger than life! We had so much fun that day, laughing our freezing cold butts off! We feel so blessed to have had even just a small glimpse into his life, and send our deepest condolences to you and your family at this difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Love, Paula, Brian, Scott and Ali Canepa

We offered Manny up in written prayer at the mass for all souls (Nov. 2) at St. Mary's here in Arizona. Of course we offered him up in our hearts, too. A whole church full of people who never had the good grace to know Manny prayed for him. We continue to pray for his soul, and for Teresa, Kellan, and Jeff. Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of Manny's life here on earth, for your mercy on us all, and thank you that you are the God of the living who leads us to everlasting life.

Each and every day, something happens that makes me smile (and cry) and think of Manny. Even though I didn't physically see him every day, I realize now that I really always have thought of him & T & Kellan & Jeff every time our family was doing something fun...wishing you all were with us while we did it. We have had really good times together... that will continue... Manny is with me always.

With the passing of Manny we lost a man with a huge heart that had an infinite capacity for generosity and love. Such a loss leaves a void for his family and those fortunate enough to call him a friend. Such a void will never completely close, but in time we will to negotiate around it. A man who loved life as Manny did would have it no other way. Love to Teresa, Kellan, Jeff and Trey

Auntie Teresa, Kellan, Jeff and Trey:

I am being totally honest when I say that I still have not yet fully comprehended what has happened. I'm not sure why this is the case, other than the obvious: I wasn't and am still not ready to accept the fact that a person I love and care for so dearly has moved on. Despite my frustration, I want you all to know that I spend a great amount of time thinking of all the reasons that I love Uncle Manny and all of the beautiful times I have been blessed to have shared with him. Uncle Manny holds a very dear place in my heart and I feel unbelievably thankful to have you all as part of my family. I could write an entry every day and after a year, still have warm things to say about him. He was an epic character and I am thankful to hold such memories regarding him. I wish you all peace and much love.

I want to you to know how sorry we are for the loss of Manny. He was like a brother, father, and grandpa to my family. We only wish we cold have spent more time with you all. One of my favorite memories of Manny is coming into Missoula and stopping at McDonalds. Manny was there, as he needed to stop and have a little breakfast while out on his morning jog.
Manny was a great man that touched the hearts of everyone he met. I hope that we all can learn to be more like he was. God must have needed a good man to be with him in Heaven, and now he has one.
Love to you all

Teresa and Sons,
Jerry and I want to let you know how privilege we are to have known Manny and you. People we care about and love may not be physically with us but are always in our hearts, thoughts, surroundings and memories. They watch over us each day and we truly can feel there presence.

I do feel bad that we did not make enough time during our weekends at the lake to drop in for that beer and visit that Manny always offered. He was truly one of the richest people in the world when the only riches that matter are the people that love and admire you and whose lives are touched by your actions and the love, friendship and caring you give.

Our thoughts are with you. Please always consider us friends and let us know if we can ever be of help.

September 18, 2010

Teresa, Kellan, Jeff, Trey, and all who loved Manny: It's great to read these memories of Manny and how he touched lives. My memories are full of how much he loved people. I guess I didn't know about the two silver stars from his service in Vietnam, but I do remember him sharing some of his war experiences when I first met him (this was pretty close to when he first met Teresa). I got the idea right away that this was a legitimate guy who'd had this horrible and amazing life-shaping experience, that it was part of him, that you had to accept it to accept him, and that he was ready to accept you on the same terms. I don't recall him mentioning the heroics involved with the silver stars. He focused on his buddies and the stuff that disturbed him about the loss of life. I suppose that's probably the way it is with true heroes.

As I got to know him better, I grew to know his love of humor and fun that sprang out of his love for people; he always seemed happiest when he was the butt of the joke. I recall him playing with my kids when they were babies. He took a lot of joy in that. I remember one time we were talking about my brother Mark, an artistic, yoga-practicing, vegetarian who, at first glance, might not seem at the top of the list of compatibility with a good ol' swamp boy, decorated war veteran who hunted big game, but Manny summed it up pretty simply: "Mark is cool. That's all there is to it." My last memory is from the last time I saw him. We were visiting in Vail, waiting to have a rare Rosenthal, O'Neal, Arizona Zimmerer hook-up, and I was paying for something at the counter of a store at the base of the mountain. All the sudden I was grabbed from behind in a gigantic bear hug and lifted off my feet. He didn't put me down for a while, either. Good, good man. We're gonna miss him. God give rest to his soul and comfort Teresa and the boys, and the rest of his family.

Hi Aunt Teresa,

I wanted to tell you that we went to Missoula last weekend to see Jeff, and it was very cool what happened. I honestly ran into someone around every corner who had amazing things to say about Uncle Manny... he truly touched so many lives. I know that is very cliche but it was so cool how many people knew him and had nothing but great things to say about him and you. I am so blessed that you are my family and I can't wait to see you and share some stories. I love you all very much.

To Teresa, Trey, Kellan, Jeff, Gina, Taylor, McKenzie, Savannah, Jennifer, Peggy, Curt, Fred, Addie Jo and all other family members:

All we can say is that we love you guys. We know that you were all the apples of Manny’s eye and he loved you all more than anything on earth. Nothing was more important. We heard him say it a million times.

Although there are many ways one can remember Manny, we will always cherish his sense of humor. From the countless phony voice mail messages he would leave at our house, to the funny pictures he would be a part of, humor was one of his many strong suits. Whether it was adults he was performing for, or little kids, Manny usually kept us all in stitches. We went through all of our digital pictures and separated out “anything Manny”. We have hundreds. We could have chosen something funny to share with everyone, but chose one of our favorites. Cruisin' with Manny and TZ and families, nothing more fun.

“The world lost a good man” is an understatement. We lost one of the very best. Manny was the pure definition of a best friend. There was absolutely nothing he wouldn’t do for his family and friends. He would indeed, always have your back. We are SO honored to have been included in his BIG list of good friends. There aren’t many modern day heroes, but Manny certainly fit that bill. We wish we had one more day with him, to let him know how much we cherished our friendship, to let him know how much we all loved him. Losing him so early hurts right to the bone and leaves an unimaginable void. We miss his smile, laughter, hugs, and yes, his farts. We can only imagine your hurt. Lean on each other for support. There are a lot of people who love you a lot. Lean on us as well. We will always be here for you.

Loving you, and missing Manny.

Our paths crossed as he masterfully explained, "girl, you're hard on your teeth" while trying to figure out how to replace my front chicklet lossed in a hockey game. His gentile yet confident nature assured I would soon be back with a full smile. When I stuck my thumb out for a ride around the lake, Manny and Dear Teresa pulled up to the dock and shared an adventourous ride, rope swing included... enbeded in my memory forever. The last time he opened the Gate for me,and I gave him a big MT bear hug,he invited me over for a visit with he and Teresa. I failed to follow up on his genuine invitation. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have traveled farther, tryed harder and given up more to join he and Teresa for hugs and story telling around the fire once again.

I haven't seen him much since the move to Louisiana, but there are great memories of Friday ski trips to Snowbowl, beer afterwards and much laughter. Manny was a very good, honorable and witty man. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you Teresa and family.

My condolences and prayers to the O'Neal family, and to his extended family of friends. I met Manny when he first opened his office in Missoula and then I left for 20 years. The next time I saw him, it was like there had only been a pause in a conversation. He truly made the world a better place.

How sad it was to read of Manny's passing in the paper. I officiated many football games with Manny over the years. I will always remember the pranks, the non stop laughter, and good times we shared. Everytime I watch an LSU game, I think of Manny. Geaux Tigers. How fraqile life is. My deepest sympathy to Teresa and family. I will remember.

Dr. O'Neal was my dentist for many years. He did some cosmetic work on my front teeth and said he couldn't make them to perfect or it would look like I had horse teeth. He always made me laugh and I actually enjoyed going to the dentist. I am so sad that he is gone. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Teresa,Kellen, Jeff, & family-
We just returned from a long weekend
out of town. We are so saddened....
Jack said to Manny several weeks ago
when they talked- "I miss you Manny".
We will always miss him.
He was a sensitive man, a funny man
a humble man, a kind man,a man who loved his family, and most of all a man
who loved his special little woman, Teresa.
We will be forever blessed to have had him in our lives.
We will have a smile on our faces when we think about Manny and the love he brought into the world.
We know he is out there reaching out to all around him with his LOVE.
Bear hugs to you, Teresa, and those
special men in your life.

Our love,
Anne and Jack Remien

Teresa,

I am so sad to hear the news about Manny and our hearts grieve for you and your family. Of all the hunting trips I have ever taken, the one to Canada with Manny stands out as the premier time I have ever spent. He was the funniest person I have ever met and when we put the antler hats on I thought I would fall off the chair laughing ! Julie and I are praying for you and your family and know God will comfort your hearts.
