Ruby Jane Smith Gouge ABINGDON, Va. Ruby Jane Smith Gouge, 72, formerly of Coeburn, Va., went home to be with her Lord on June 22, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She passed away at her home with her family by her side. Ruby loved gardening, flowers, making crafts with her sisters and traveling with her family. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy in life. She was admired and loved by all who knew her. Ruby was a faithful member of the Pippins Chapel Freewill Baptist Church where she loved her church family as her own. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford Gouge; her daughter, Kathy Gouge; her parents, Jack and Irene Smith, all of Coeburn; and her sister, Joann Childs of Indianapolis. Ruby is survived by her daughter, Regina Edwards and husband, Tony, of Abingdon, Va.; son, Ron Gouge and wife, Melinda, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Brian Gouge of Coeburn; three grandsons, Nathan Gouge of Kingsport, Logan Edwards of Anchorage, Alaska and Lance Edwards of Abingdon; and one granddaughter, Amanda Jobe of Kingsport. Also surviving are her sisters, Rosemary Funk and husband, Bascom, Faye Mullins, Joyce Caldwell, Jettie Caldwell and husband, Ronnie, Carolyn Armstrong and husband, James, and Susie Salyer and husband, Rex; one brother, Delbert Smith and wife, Phyllis. The family will receive friends Friday, June 24, 2011, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sturgill Funeral Home, 310 6th Street NW, Coeburn, VA. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011, in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with Pastor Nolan Stanley and Martin Funk officiating. Burial will follow in the Gouge Cemetery Caney Ridge Section of Coeburn. Sturgill Funeral Homes, 310 6th Street NW, Coeburn VA 24230, in charge of arrangements.
