Ruby L Grandy

Ruby Lee Grandy the youngest of 10 children, was born on August 29, 1924 in
Ozark, Alabama to Katie Borom - Matthews & Porter Matthews. She was
educated in the public school system in Leon County, Florida and Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. She received her high school diploma from Benjamin Franklin High
School. She received her diploma to become a licensed beautician.
While working as a stylist she met and married Clifton Grandy, who introduced
her to the automobile tire business. They went on to open their own tire business
located at 27 th & Poplar Street, in 1962. She was the first female tire changer in
North Philadelphia, people would come near and far to see this lady tire changer
that everyone was talking about. She handled the tire changer machine better
than the men that worked in the tire store. They were amazed to see a woman
throwing tires around like they were they were a piece of paper. Her knowledge
of tires was a conversation that anyone who visited the tire store was delighted to
share with others they knew.
She remained at the business until she decided to begin a career with
Quartermaster as a seamstress, where she remained for 13 years, retiring in 1993.
During her tenure with Quartermaster, Ruby received numerous awards for
developing methods that would save the operation time and cut out unnecessary
steps, as well as awards for sustaining superior service.
After retiring from Quartermaster, Ruby became a Senior Companion for PCA, and
received numerous certificates and awards. She later returned to working at the
tire business part-time for her daughter Diann and son -in-law Floyd; who she
affectionately referred to as “her boss”. This demonstrated her work ethics, Ruby
believed no matter who she worked for, the boss was the boss.
Ruby never pursued art as a career but was a talented artist; who wished she had
gone school for art. Ruby was a devote Christian in the Church of Christ; where
she was a member for over 70 years. She was always a soldier for the Lord,
constantly working to bring others into the church. She never failed to ask during
her conversation with you; “have you ever heard about the Church of Christ, why
don’t you let me have a class with you”. Ruby was convinced that the Lord was
leaving her around for a reason, and that was to bring as many souls into the
Church of Christ that she could.

Ruby was proceeded in death by; her husband Clifton Grandy, her mother and
father, her brothers, Arthur, Sidney, Sammy J., Porter Jr., James; her sisters,
Louella, Ruth, Eva and Dorothy, her daughters; Linda Willis and Cynthia Hart, her
daughter -in law, Gloria Matthews, her granddaughter, Kanika Bumpas, grandson
Antonio Willis and great-grandson Marquel.
She leaves to cherish her memories; her sons, Noel Matthews and Ralph Grandy,
her daughters, Diann Grandy-Singletary (Floyd), Cheryl Grandy, Audrey Grandy -
Watson (Anthony), her grandsons, Kevin Hart, Jaysohn Hart, Anthony Grandy
(Stephanie) Ralph Bumpas (Millie), William Grandy, Major Jackson, Noel
Matthews Jr., Joseph Andrade, Michael Fisher, Lorin Fisher II and Joey Grandy, her
granddaughters, Sandra Andrade, Shante James, Ashley Coulter (Andre) and
Rashonda Fisher, her great grandchildren, Kenny, Kevin Jr., Kera, Kenneth, Olivya,
Razique, Lamar, Julianni, Jayda, King and Bentley, one brother-in law, Joe Grandy
(Norma), dear friends Ms. Mattie Munford and Ms. Dorothy Fisher and a host of
nieces, nephews and friends.
