Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2007.
RUBY O. LEININGER, aged 92, died at Friendship Village, Dublin, on June 30, 2007. Ruby was born in Seattle, WA, the only daughter of Nels and Lena Osterman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years, Robert Leininger, and by brothers Harry, Roy, Arthur, Carl, and Floyd. She is survived by her brother Ralph (Maryann) Osterman of Bellevue, WA, and by her children, Dr. Karen (Dr. Jonathan) Kaplan of New York, NY, Christine (Dr. Richard) Furlanetto of Charleston, SC, Dr. Nels (Dr. Gail English) Leininger of South Bend, IN, Eric (Susan) Leininger of Upper Arlington, and by 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ruby received BS and MS degrees from the University of Washington, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She then went to Cornell University for doctoral work in Nutrition. She took a break from her studies to teach at Fenn College in Cleveland, where she met and married Robert Irvin Leininger, a graduate student at Western Reserve University who was also an Instructor at Fenn. They lived in Springfield, MA for five years and in 1948 the family moved to Columbus, and then to Upper Arlington. Robert was employed by Battelle Memorial Institute, where he did plastics and biomedical research until his retirement. When their youngest child was in school, Ruby returned to teaching and taught 9th grade science at Hastings Junior High for 16 years. Ruby moved to Friendship Village in 1999, where she was active in the bridge club, worked in the library, and made new friends. bRuby has passed on to her children and grandchildren her great respect for the value of education and her love of reading. She loved crossword and all types of word puzzles and was very tough to beat at Scrabble well into her upper 80's. Ruby's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Friendship Village Health Center for the excellent care she received in her final years. Ruby will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on July 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Friendship Village, 6000 Riverside Drive, Dublin. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 12:00 p.m. at Friendship Village. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Friendship Village, or Goods for Good International. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 ZOLLINGER ROAD, COLUMBUS, OHIO. Send condolences to www.schoedinger.com
