Hi. I served with Rudy in 97/98 at the Danville recruiting company. He was my 1SG when I commanded the company. I know this note comes really late but I just saw his obituary. At any rate I thought he was a class act and he really looked after me.

My best to Ivy and his family.

I really miss Rudy. He gave us wonderful memories to hang on to. He was funny, full of jokes, a great story teller, gave good advice and counsel, and was the “go to guy” when you needed help. We will always see him through the eyes of Ivy, Shawna, Charmaine, Michael and Urban who are beautiful and loving, through his grandchildren, Malia and Kamalei who tell stories of love and adoration of their Papa, and new grandchildren who will come to know him by His Legacy that will be shared, through his young nephews who honor him, and through his family and friends who continue to share their life experiences of him with love and laughter. For those who love and remember Rudy, we know for sure that His Legacy lives on.

It doesn’t seem as if the days get any easier without dad here. Every day there is a reminder of him that makes me miss him even more. What I am grateful for though is all of the wonderful memories that dad has left us with, there is no greater gift than cherished times spent and the wonderful memories kept….those live on forever. Dad, thank you for being such a wonderful father and friend, thank you for all that you did for me. I have learned so much from you just by the way you led your life, by your example I have learned many life lessons. Just by your kind ways you managed to touch the lives of many and I can only hope that in my lifetime I can give as much. I wish you could be here for the birth of your third grandchild. Michael and I will share all of the wonderful memories and stories of you so that your grandbaby knows what a wonderful man their papa was. Please continue to visit me in my dreams to let me know you will always be there. I love and miss you so much.

There are no words that can describe the pain of losing your love, your best friend, your children's father, and grandchildren's papa. Rudy and I have been together for 37 years and each day was like yesterday. He did not have to do much for me to know how much he loved me, he was a good man and husband that through all our years together still could make my heart skip a beat. Rudy and I often talked about how our love for each other felt like the first time we met at Aiea Intermediate School, it was "Rudy and Ivy". We both knew what we wanted in life and as Rudy often said "our life together was like no other, the best." He was very proud of his daughters for the kind and loving women they had grown to be; his granddaughters for the joy and happiness they brought to his heart; and his son in-laws for being the kind of man every father wanted for his daughter.

I thank God everyday for giving me this beautiful man who together we created a beautiful family. I thank my children for loving their Dad in everything they did for him and with him. Rudy left us with his quiet strength the foundation of our love that will continue in our children. To my newest grandchild, we will keep your Papa's memory alive so you too will know him and love him.

A cherished lei woven together with the warmest of love, with the sweet fragrance of our children never forgotten. I miss you deeply my beloved Rudy with love until we meet again, together you and I at the sacred house of God.

Forever Yours, I Love You ~ Ivy

In remembrance, let us reflect upon the life of our beloved Rudy Kealoha Abafo.
I truly believe that Rudy's parents knew from birth that he would be so giving of his love throughout his life; hence, his middle name, "Kealoha." Since the day I met Rudy, Ivy, Shawna and Charmaine in Nuernberg, Germany ('82), I became aware that love flourished in the Abafo family. Everyone he met regarded Rudy as a very devoted and loving husband, and a specially-loving dad dedicated to his daughters. Eventually, he extended his loving ways over to his sons-in-law Urban and Mike. His life of giving was blessed by the births of grand-daughters Malia and Kamaile to whom he devoted every bit of his love. Without missing a beat, he bestowed a great deal of respect, companionship, and a shoulder-to-lean-on to everyone else.
In essence, Rudy continues to love each and everyone of us. We, who had been blessed with Rudy in our lives, will profoundly miss his gift of benevolence.
Me "Kealoha" Pumehana...my friend, my brother.

It is an honor to have Rudy as a friend and to serve with him in the US Army. He was truly an inspiration to many. Mission driven, but had a sense of humor to soften the stress of recruiting. Definetely a patriot, so proud to wear the uniform. Ivy, there is no words that can make the pain go away, but deep within you, Rudy will always be there in your heart. You and the girls are always in my prayers.

It's truly amazing how one man can touch the lives of so many just by doing what came natural: treating everyone with love, dignity, and respect. His presence is still felt in many ways and his legacy brings about the pure and gentle kindness in which we should all interact with one another. What a privilege to have known such a kind man.

Today is a sad day for me as MSG Abafo was Station Commander when I joined the Army. I was fortunate to replace him as Operations NCO of the Sacramento Recruiting Battalion 12 years later. I learned so much from him as he was a man of few words but tremendous deeds. I know we will all miss him. My condolence to his Family as I know you were so dear to him

Ivy, Shawna, Charmaine, Michael, Urban, Malia and Kamalei:
I will miss Rudy for all that he was and what he stood for. A man of strength and much love. He had enough love to go around for everyone and he showed it in his quiet subtle ways....simply by lending a hand, being available when we needed help, cooking a favorite dish for the family, telling a story, and making us laugh. A true role model for all the young men in our family to follow. Many hearts are broken and saddened for the loss of Rudy but the joyful memories of all the good times spent with him will be kept alive through his legacy. I love you all.

Dearest Ivy,

My most heartfelt condolences for your untimely loss. I only knew Rudy from our conversations--enough to determine his kindness and strength. I know that your own indomitable spirit will weather this storm. My prayers are with you and your family. Take care, dear Ivy. Remember the good times and push forward--for your road is still ahead of you and full of promise.

Ivy,
I am very sorry for your loss and and the loss to everyone Rudy ever touched. He was a great guy and one of the all-round best soldiers I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

One of my fondest memories was a time that I invited Rudy to play racquetball with one other soldier while we were TDY in Reno. I didn't give him any advance notice and so he came to the Reno YMCA without any equipment. He used a raggedy borrowed racquet, wore flip-flops and beat us badly! Always with that mischievous grin we were all so fond of.

We will miss him terribly. Please let me know if I can do anything for you.

Rudy was an irreplaceable member of our winning team when Sacramento Battalion was #1 in Recruiting Command in 1997 and 1998. Although his East Bay market was arguably the toughest of the six battalion districts, Rudy always approached his job and his soldiers with uncommon energy and optimism. He never gave up and managed, as only he could, to find humor in even the most trying of situations. Rudy was an inspiration to me, to his peers and to the hundreds of soldiers over the years that depended on him for guidance and leadership. He will be sorely missed . . . .

I am really sorry for your loss. When I met Mr. Abafo I was going thru an awkward time. Simple conversations outside at the barbeque pit or at the gym at Travis have made a lasting impression on me.
