I remember Rudy while growing up in Oxbow, and "always" being at Rudy and Joyce's with Judy. He was a most unique person, and as you can see by all the condolences very well liked.Joyce and family I want you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers, not just at this sad time, but I think of you all often. To Rudy's wife and his family,I just wanted to say,"Thank You Rudy for being a great friend to my brother Leroy,he talked about you often. He loved going fishing with you.The weekend I came up during Leroy's wake, his daughter Ann told me I needed to go meet Rudy.I spent 4 hrs. with Rudy,we talked about hunting, fishing, trapping which was both our passion. We discussed my brother and what he meant to Rudy and the Oxbow.Leroy said many times what Rudy meant to him,and how Rudy showed him and told him things about bear and general things.Rudy told me about how he built his house next to the river and how he moved it because of flooding. When I shook his hand I could feel the honesty, compassion, love for his family, love for the outdoors and life.I had talked about coming up this summer ,I would have liked to visit with Rudy and talked some more.Rudy kept telling me how I looked like my brother.Thank You Rudy for welcoming me in your home, when I got ready to leave he begged me not to leave he also said you are always welcome in my home and as long as you are alive Roy will never be gone, and thank you for being a great friend to my brother, that means a lot to me.When I left that night I felt like he was a book of knowledge,it was like having a mountain of Gold to meet a great man like Rudy.My sympathy goes out to Rudy's wife and the entire family.May our Lord guide you all during this sad time.Joe Humphrey

Rudy was one of the best men I ever met. I am proud to have known him and will miss him. I was lucky enough to have spent time with him while hunting deer. Those memories will remain with me forever. I stayed in his little hunting shack year after year and enjoyed every minute of those days. I will never forget him and his fantastic stories of his life.

Rudy: You will be missed and stories of you will last for many generations. I wish I had thanked you one last time for the vegetables you brought to Ellen and I when we were wrestling with life in the wilds with little to eat. I will always remember the Jeep I bought from you (for $150)and you told me that I should never drive it any further than I could walk home from. You were right. And yes we always liked to hear how you talked. Our condolences to your whole family. God Bless!

I can't imagine Rudy ever thinking that condolences would be left to him this way. He was a rare man, and his story should become part of Aroostook's and OxBow's written history, but if he thought about it at all, he may not have wanted it that way. However, since I have the opportunity to do it, here, I will:
I guess my first memory of Rudy was when we'd first moved to "The Farm" (1959), had a barn, and Rudy asked Dad to keep his cow while Rudy went guiding. Later on, (they must have both been Selectmen and the United States was talking about putting a man into space), Rudy (Dad said this) wondered how they'd poop, being contained in suits and without gravity. Later on, I "borrowed" Dad's car one night and stalled it out at the end of the OxBow road. Walked to Rudy's, he came and gave me a boost and nothing more was ever said. After that we were haying in a field (that's growing back to forest) and while throwing bales onto the truck I noticed that Rudy's arm had a muscle ON his muscle! God Speed, Rudy Michalka, I know of no one who could take your place.
