RUDOLPH STOECKEL Obituary

RUDOLPH STOECKEL, Jr. MELBOURNE BEACH Rudolph William Stoeckel, Jr., Ph.D, passed away on Satur day, July 15, 2006, at William Childs Hospice House. Rudy was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Following graduation from Mount Assump tion Institute in Plattsburg, NY, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his A.B. at St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vermont and his MA and Ph.D at Layola University of Chicago. In 1969 he began his teaching career as an Assistant Professor at Tri State University in Angola, Indiana and subse quently attained the ranks of Associate Professor and Profes sor. In 1980 he became Chairman of the English Department. In 1983, he gave up the chairman ship and moved to the Humani ties Department at Florida Institute of Technology as Pro fessor of English. His focus was on seventeenth-century English drama. Shakespeare and Ren aissance iconography on which he wrote and lectured widely. During his 40 years of teach ing, he developed a deep inter est in music and art; he enjoyed playing the classical guitar and the recorder and has left a few remarkable watercolors and oil paintings. Dr. Stoeckel received the Florida Tech Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching in 1990 and in 1997, he received a Sabbati cal award to study Savonarola as Martyr in Florence, Italy. Despite his struggle with a prolonged illness, he continued to teach until 2005, ever inspir ing his students who always recall his intellectual acumen, humor and passionate love of literature. Survivors include his wife, Camilla; his sister, Audrey; as well as sisters-in-law, brothers- in-law and nieces and nephews. Rudy was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph W. Stoeckel, Sr. and Jane Chalmers Stoeckel; his sisters, Elaine and Jane. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the MIMA Foun dation of Brevard, Inc., 5200 Babcock Street NE, Suite 304, Palm Bay, FL 32905.
