Russel J. Hyma

Russel J. Hyma, 91, of Zeeland, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. Russ was born September 8, 1930, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Rhyne and Trena (Groenink) Hyma. Russ married Phyllis Broek in 1950 and they raised their five children in Muskegon and South Haven. Russ was a Chevy-Olds dealership owner in South Haven prior to his retirement. Phyllis preceded him in death in 1994 after 44 years of marriage. Russ met Martina Vander Kooi in Florida and they married in 1995. Russ and Martina split their time between Michigan and Florida for several years. Russ and Martina are members of First Christian Reformed Church of Zeeland. He enjoyed flying his plane for Wings of Mercy. Russ also volunteered and was a board member of Missionary Flights International. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years. Russ was also preceded in death by his son Randall Hyma, step-son-in-law David Zuidema, brother-in-law Ken Frens, sister-in-law Linda Hyma, brother-in-law Hessel de Groot. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Martina, children: Julie (Mark) Vander Meulen of Grand Haven, Sheri (Gordon) de Best of Bangor, Mark A. (Liz) Hyma of Jamul, CA, Jeffrey S. (Dawn) Hyma, of Defuniak Springs, Florida; daughter-in-law Marcia and Jim Kellogg of Lake Barrington, IL, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, siblings: Rolland (Cora) Hyma, Joyce Frens, Lois (Lee) Ver Hoeven, Bill (Jeanne) Hyma, Don Hyma; step-children: Arlette (Albert) Hepp, Sandra (Doug) Feldman, Yvonne Zuidema, Suzanne (Steve) Van Ek, and Martina's four sisters in the Netherlands: Jeannette, Jeanine, Sylvette, Simone. A memorial service in honor of the faith and life of Russel J. Hyma will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at First Christian Reformed Church, 15 S. Church Street, Zeeland MI 49464. Visitation will be 11:45-12:45 prior to the service at church. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery, Muskegon. Memorial contributions may be made to Missionary Flights International.
