Russell Cadwalader

Russell James "Rusty" Cadwalader, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and talented artist, passed away due to heart failure on February 22, 2025, in Leonardtown, Maryland at the age of 76. Born on October 9, 1948, in Darby, Pennsylvania, Rusty was a person of remarkable character-selfless, loving, and generous, touching the lives of many with his unwavering kindness.

Rusty's formative years were spent in Frostburg, Maryland, where he graduated from Beall High School in the Class of 1966. He furthered his education by attending Allegheny Community College between 1970 and 1972, building a foundation for his future endeavors. As a young man, Rusty's aptitude for mechanics shone brightly as he worked for various automotive shops and dealerships, a passion that remained with him throughout his life.

From 1969-1976, Rusty's journey took a patriotic turn when he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country with honor and distinction during the Vietnam War 1969-1970. As an Engine Mechanic, he dedicated himself to excellence and was recognized for his service with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. These accolades were a testament to his commitment and bravery.

Rusty's artistic talent was undeniable, having been given the opportunity to work for Disney World as an artist. However, his love for automotive interests prevailed, allowing him to share and explore this passion with his sons. His ability to draw and create was just one of the many facets that made Rusty an extraordinary individual.

Rusty was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Benton and Claire Painter Cadwalader and his sister Sandra Cadwalader Whidden.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marsha Caton Cadwalader, and their devoted children: Allen (Janice) Rafferty of Huntingtown, Adam (Katie) Cadwalader of Mechanicsville, and Sarah (Gary) Campbell of Glen Burnie. Rusty's legacy also lives on through his adoring grandchildren: Brett Rafferty, Katharine Cadwalader, and Joseph Cadwalader. Each family member will forever cherish the memories and the unwavering love he provided.

Generosity was Rusty's hallmark; he was always the first to offer help and the last to ask for it. His ability to give so freely of himself was a rare gift that made a lasting impact on his community and everyone fortunate enough to know him.

As we bid farewell to Rusty, we celebrate a life well-lived - a life filled with love, service, and the joy of sharing his many gifts. His was a journey marked by admirable achievements and simple pleasures, a path defined by the depth of his character and the breadth of his kindness.

Rusty's departure leaves behind a void that cannot be filled, but also a legacy that will continue to inspire. His story is a poignant reminder of the difference one person can make in the lives of many. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded to live with the same selflessness, love, and generosity that Rusty embodied.

Though he may be gone, the memory of Russell James "Rusty" Cadwalader will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. His spirit, a beacon of unwavering love and kindness, will continue to guide us as we navigate the path of life without him. Rest in peace, Rusty; your legacy will never be forgotten.

There will be a Celebration of Life on March 29th, 2025, from 1-5pm at the American Legion in Lusby, Md. Post 274, 11820 MD-765, Lusby, MD 20657.

There will be a second Celebration of Life at the Frostburg American Legion on April 26th, 2025.
