Former colliery manager Mr Russell Keddie (82), of Linden Grove, Kirkby, was cremated at Mansfield after a service at St Wilfrid's Church, Kirkby.
Born at South Shields, County Durham, Mr Keddie was educated at South Shields High School and Durham University where he gained his BSc degree. He had lived locally for 46 years.
Mr Keddie began working for the National Coal Board in the North East before becoming colliery manager at Shildon, and then locally at New Hucknall and Sutton collieries. He was later appointed head of industrial training in Leicestershire, retiring in 1988. He was also a governor at Ashfield School and at West Nottinghamshire Technical College in Mansfield.
His interests included playing bridge, theatre and classical music, football. cricket and current affairs.
Mr Keddie, who died at his home, leaves his wife, Mrs Shirley Keddie, son John, two daughters, Sheila and Anne, and seven grandchildren.
