Ruth Brin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 1 to Oct. 2, 2009.
Brin, Ruth Firestone Age 88, died Sept. 30, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Brin, mother of Judith Brin Ingber (Jerome), Aaron (Harriet), David (David), Rabbi Deborah Brin (Yael), grandmother of Noah and Shai Ingber (Melissa), and great-grandmother of Sasha Juliana, brother-in-law, Charles Brin (Beryl), and many nieces, nephews and friends across many generations. Ruth was a well known author of 13 published books including, poetry, non-fiction, a memoir, children's books and a novel, published when she was 85. For 35 years she reviewed books for the Star Tribune, and recently for the American Jewish World. Ruth's poetic interpretation of Biblical texts and ancient prayers made them relevant and accessible for our lives today. A ground breaking poet whose woman's voice was crucial to creating space for women in the traditional Jewish contexts, she led the way in liberal Jewish movements. A nationally known liturgist in the Jewish world, it is difficult to find a Reform, Conservative, or Reconstructionist prayer book or anthology that does not include her writings. She was a founding editor of "Identity Magazine." Ruth, the daughter of the late Milton and Irma Firestone, grew up in St. Paul, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College and received a master's degree from the U of M. In 2007, she was recognized with the Outstanding Alumnae Award from the College of Liberal Arts, U of M. In 1985, she received the Keter Shem Tov Award, from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. She and her husband Howard were leaders in the Mpls Jewish Community. A nature lover and world traveler, Ruth was involved in the civil affairs of the Twin Cities. During World War II she worked for the War Production Board in Washington, DC, and later taught at Macalester College and the U of M Extension. She lectured and taught in many venues, continuing to write book reviews and teaching classes on Biblical studies until her death. In lieu of flowers gifts can be given to The Howard B. Brin Endowment for the Arts at the Mpls Jewish Fed. 13100 Wayzata Blvd., Mtka. 55305; the Ruth and Howard Brin Scholarship Fund at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College 1299 Church Rd., Wyncote, PA, 19095 or the American Indian College Fund 833 Greenwood Blvd., Denver, CO 80221-4448. Funeral service FRIDAY (TODAY) 1 PM at ADATH JESHURUN CONGREGATION, 10500 W. Hillside Ln., Mtka. Family will receive friends at 7:30 PM Sun. through Wed. at 4209 Basswood Rd and Thursday, 7:30 PM at The Kenwood, 825 Summit Ave, Mpls. Hodroff-Epstein 612-871-1234 www.hodroffepstein.com

Ruth's words continue to inspire in Montreal, for virtually every week we offer one of her poems or meditations on the Shabbat supplement card. It was an honor to have known her in life.

I loved reading "Bittersweet Berries". I will miss Ruth. I felt deprived of her wisdom and stories a bit, as we moved from Minnesota when I was young. However, the few times that we shared will remain precious in my mind and heart. I remember her butterflies and her poetry. She always seemed to have time to look and listen. I was glad that I got to show her my daughter. I wish I had been able to visit her more often. She is often thought of and missed.

Having known Ruth personally as a refugee student and later through her words, thoughts and book, I only wish my family could have known this very special woman. My thoughts and sympathy go out to all her family.

I came to know some of Ruth Brin's beautiful poetry thru my Rabbi, Sidney Greenberg of blessed memory who always included some meaningful poems of hers in his prayer books. He always spoke graciously of her and her understanding of what the prayers said when we used those poems as part of a sevice at Temple Sinai in Dresher, Pa.

A first year teacher at West High, I had the good fortune to have that exceptional, exuberant talent, Judy Brin, in class. In her generous, nurturing way, Judy's mother Ruth invited my wife and me for Purim dinner in their home. The Brin family has been a literary, artistic, religious and humanitarian inspiration to a whole community of lives. We offer sympathy for a great loss but find comfort knowing that Ruth's devotion and creative vitality have been planted far and wide.

Ruth Brin's words have become our own, the words of our prayers and hearts. I am grateful to know her daughter, Rabbi Deborah Brin, another of Ruth's gifts to the world.

I came to know Ruth Brin through her beautiful words years before I had the privilege of getting to know her personally. I cherish memories of both of these. May her memory be for a blessing!

Our condolences to you from the Southwest! The Brin family have been cornerstones of Jewish arts and culture from Mpls, to the wider world.

May Ruth's writings, children, and legacy and memory be for a blessing, and may the family and all be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I was so sorry to hear of Ruth's passing. I have such fond memories of the many Sunday afternoons our whole Colbert clan visited at the Brins lovely home. I thank Judy whose early ballet lessons inspired the dancer in me and changed my life forever. Losing a mother is , by far, one of the hardest blows life can deal. ( I know from experiance) My love and sympathies go out to all of the family on this great loss.

Ruth was a wonderful person who made great contributions to society in her lifetime;
There's nothing one can do or say
When God sees fit to take away
Someone who was held so dear
With whom you've shared a laugh; a tear
How long on earth for their work-time plan
Was made by God, not by man

I grew to know Ruth through her brother Linn and sister-in-law Jean. She was a fascinating person to talk with and a font of knowledge. She has lived a good life. My thoughts are with Aaron, Judy, and the family.

Ruth and Howard were literal forces in my upbringing, being treasured friends of my parents. Visits to their home was like visiting family. Ruth's intellect, sense of humor, and warmth were a beacon, like the North Star.
