Ruth McGlathery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2025.
Ruth Armstrong McGlathery, 93, passed away on December 24, 2024 in Lynnfield Massachusetts. Ruthie grew up in Auburndale, Massachusetts and graduated from Colby-Sawyer Junior College. After marrying, she settled in Wilton, Connecticut, where she and her husband raised their three children Doug, Gordon and Karen. In her later years she returned to the family home in Auburndale, where she lived with her sister Joan.

Ruthie spent over 75 years summering on her beloved Nantucket Island in the family cottage her parents purchased in 1944. At the age of 91, Ruthie travelled overseas to celebrate her granddaughter's wedding in the UK, where she was one of the last revellers on the dance floor. Ruthie was a devoted tennis player well into her 70s, a lover of professional ballet, and an avid reader. Throughout her life Ruthie developed deep personal connections across all generations. She loved hearing people's stories and had a wonderful mind for keeping track of them. She genuinely cared for everyone she knew.

Ruthie was predeceased by her parents, George and Ruth Armstrong, and by her older sister Joan Armstrong. She is survived by her sons Doug McGlathery of Reading MA and his wife Kathy, Gordon McGlathery of Manchester UK and his wife Sue, and her daughter Karen McGlathery of Charlottesville VA and her husband Peter Berg; her six grandchildren Lisa Ashdown, Sarah McCarthy, Andrew McGlathery, Michael McGlathery, Julia Berg, and Katrine Berg; and her three great grandchildren Nathan Ashdown, Lucas McCarthy, and Louise McGlathery.

Ruthie's family would like to thank the staffs of Sunrise of Lynnfield, and of All Care for their wonderful care and support of Ruthie.

A celebration of Ruthie's life will be held at The Allen Center for the Arts in West Newton, Massachusetts on January 25, 2025 at 11am.
