Ruth Steck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2025.
Ruth Voellm Steck passed away on February 9, 2025, in New Providence, New Jersey, at the age of 95. She was born on November 6, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Herman C. Voellm and Elizabeth Damm. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul G. Steck, whom she married in 1955, and her brother, Herman K. Voellm.

Ruth's parents were German immigrants, and she was the first in her family to attend college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University. She worked in the family business before marrying Paul and moving to northern New Jersey, where they raised their family. A longtime resident of Summit and Chatham, Ruth created a warm and welcoming home filled with love and hospitality.

A gifted gourmet cook, Ruth delighted in hosting festive gatherings and elaborate family dinners. During the holidays, she baked hundreds of cookies, carefully arranged in vintage tins for eager recipients. She cherished time spent at the Noe Pond Club, where she formed lifelong friendships and watched her children learn to swim and dive; the Ocean Dunes Coop in Amagansett, New York, where she vacationed and served on the Board; and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, where she pursued her passion for pottery and watercolor painting while volunteering for fundraising events. An avid collector of antiques, she played a role in launching the Newark Academy Antiques Show as part of the school's parent association. Ruth and Paul also shared a love of travel, seeking destinations rich in history and cultural experiences.

Ruth is survived by her children, Paul K. Steck and Christina E. (Tina) Steck; four grandchildren, Julia Steck, Brian Steck, Spencer Young (Marisa Cummings), and Tyler Young; and a great-grandchild, Henry Young.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, followed by a reception in Mulford Hall. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, the American Heart Association, or World Central Kitchen.

Ruth's warmth, creativity, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

My condolences to Tina and Paul and their families. Your mother (and father) had a long-lasting impact on me and the love I feel/show to my children's friends. They showed me much generosity when Tina and I were in college. May your mom's memory always be a blessing. xx, Esther
