Ruth Warrick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 18, 2005.
NEW YORK (AP) - Ruth Warrick, the darling of the daytime soap opera "All My Children" who launched her career in Orson Welles' all-time classic "Citizen Kane," has died, ABC-TV said Monday. She was 88.

Warrick died at her New York home Saturday of complications from pneumonia, said ABC.

In "All My Children," which debuted in 1970, Warrick played Phoebe Tyler Wallingford, the grande dame of the fictitious affluent town of Pine Valley. She portrayed the meddlesome and over-the-top personality so believably that her fans often had trouble distinguishing between the stylish actress and her fictitious, equally sophisticated character.

Twice nominated for an Emmy for the role, Warrick often talked about how Phoebe Tyler had become an integral part of her life.

"I understand her. I may not be all Phoebe, but she is all me," Warrick wrote in her autobiography, "The Confessions of Phoebe Tyler."

The producer Jorn Winther once said of the actress: "Obviously Ruth and Phoebe are separate and unique, yet they have much in common. All I can say with confidence is that they are both great ladies and that I love them."

Warrick, born and raised in St. Joseph, Mo., left for New York after graduating from the University of Kansas City. Her interest in acting led her to the Mercury Theater troupe, headed by Welles.

She made her Hollywood debut in 1941 in "Citizen Kane" as Emily Norton Kane. Welles, who co-wrote, directed and starred in the film, hand-picked her for the role of his wife because he said there were no "ladies in Hollywood" who fit the bill.

For Ruth...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I'm so glad that I found this sight! As an aspiring actor myself I must say Ruth Warrick has always been one of my inspirations. She always reminded me of my maternal grandmother with her very ladylike, punctilious behavior. She was Pine Valley's own little chaperone and one might say the Rose Kennedy with more iron-will of Pine Valley. My favorite memories of Phoebe are of her fights with Myrtle Fargate over Professor Langley. Those were simply a treat! I will miss seeing the English/Tyler/Wallingford estate sets on AMC too. Phoebe had such a grand home. There was a quote Professor Langley once said about his eternal ladylove back in December 1979 that can be repeated about both Ruth & Phoebe- "You are living in the wrong age my sweet. In another age when beauty was more appreciated your face alone would've inspired painters & poets alike.." That is a fitting tribute to such a sumptuous glamourpuss like Ms. Warrick. Sleep with the angels my darling! We will always hold you in our memories & in our hearts.

I just found this guestbook and I wanted to let Ruth's family know that she will be greatly missed. I started writing to her when I was 10 and she answered me back every time. Phoebe was a great inspiration for me and Ruth and even greater inspiration. I never met her in-person, but always wanted to. To Karen, John, and Tim: Thank you for donating some of your Mother's artifacts. I was honored to receive one of her dresses and a broach and most of all her sheet music. To Sally Kemp: Bless you for being there for her. She mentioned you many times in letters she sent back to me. Ruth will always be in my heart.

I have missed watching All My Children the past few years, but I grew up watching Phoebe Tyler. She inspired me with her strength and spirit. For some reason I came across a soap update and saw the memorial service. The tears flowed when I realized what was happening. I have loved Ruth for years and she will be sadly missed. She was the original grande dame and diva of soaps and you will not see the likes of her again. May God send his peace and blessings to her friends and family. She will be missed.

Ruth and I were friends for 50 years, ever since we did an Off-Broadway play together in the 50's.

The first time we met was in 1980 at Les Mouches, a club in NY. You told me about your book, "The Confessions of Phoebe Tyler". I ws invigorated by your energy and I was thrilled when you gave me the rights to produce a party in honor of the publication of the book. It was obvious that you loved what you did and that love was infectious. I remember you standing outside in the rain, signing autographs until the very last person waiting had received theirs.

Meeting you again - at Unity - was an unexpected pleasure. Thankyou for being such a support to everyone else.

I used to watch All My Children in the '70's when I was little. I was sick at home with asthma many times and became addicted to the soap opera. I especially loved Phoebe! Ruth Warrick was great in that role and probably should have won an Emmy many times over. Yes, Phoebe was a bit over-the-top, but she was fun, nonetheless. I used to call my mom Phoebe when she went into "diva-mode." When I was in college in the '80s I had the great opportunity to meet Ms. Warrick and to get her autograph. She was extremely nice and gracious. Wherever Ms. Warrick and Phoebe are now, I know they both will live on in our memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Ruth Warick's death. I watched her on ATWT's when I was just a kid. In those days it was quite shocking to see a woman in love with a married man! It was wonderful to see her on the 35th anniversary ofAMC. She will certainly be missed by all of us, her adoring fans.

I too am saddened at the loss of Ruth Warrick. I loved her in Peyton Place as Hannah Cord and as Phoebe Tyler Wallingford in All My Children. I was shocked to learn of her passing as she had just appeared on the 35th anniversary show. A true performer she made one last appearance before passing.

She will be truly missed. God Bless Her and Keep Her. We love you Ruth!

January 25, 2005

I tape AMC and watch it when I come home each night as I did this past Monday evening and was saddened when Ms. Warrick's name appeared after the show's credits. I just saw her on the show's 35th anniversary!!! She was absolutely beautiful. I didn't believe she left us at first - with all the news mentioning Johnny Carson, I looked to see if anything was said or written about Ruth Warwick. Then I looked today on line and searched for her name and found the articles. I was so very sad. I remember watching Ms. Warwick on Peyton Place - and then was delighted to see her on AMC playing Phoebe Tyler. While I didn't know her in person, her portrayal of Phoebe and her appearance on AMC these latest years showed a very sweet and likeable person. My sincere condolences to her family and all who knew her. I will miss seeing her on TV - what an absolute delightful and beautiful lady to watch. I so hope that AMC will do a memorial episode on Ms. Warwick - a tape that I will surely keep forever.

I have watched AMC

practically all of my life.

When I saw the dedication of

todays show to Ruth Warrick,

I cried. I hadn't known of

her passing until then.

Ms. Warrick will forever be in my memory as a lady who exuded regality, both on

and especially off screen.

I always sensed an

approachability about her

that so few stars of her

magnitude actually embody.

She was absolutely glamorous

during her last appearence on screen during the 35th

anniversary of AMC.

I can only hope that I will

someday be able to posess

such beauty, grace, energy, and poise.

She will live forever in our

hearts, memories and

thankfully, on screen.

May all of her family,

friends, co-workers, and fans find comfort and peace; for

she would have wanted

nothing less.

Thank you Ruth.

May God hold you in the palm

of his hand.

Most sincerely~

Thank you Aunt Phobe for being such a great part of my life. I have enjoyed AMC since it started. I would have friends tell me what was going on while I worked (prior to VCR), then I taped every session. I still tape the show so that I can watch it without interruption. AMC has been part of my life for many years and I intend to continue watching as long as it is on and I am able to see. Like Carol Burnett, I have always been a big fan of AMC and especially dear Aunt Phoebe, Ruth Warrick. I've been watching the show since its beginning when I was just five years old. Ruth always reminded me so much of one of my own special and dear great aunts, whom I lost in 2001. May God's blessings of comfort and love be with all of Ruth's family and with her dear friends at AMC, I know she will be greatly missed just as much as she was so joyfully received at the 35th Anniversary show - not a dry eye anywhere. What a treat that we were all able to share in that one last moment together. Blessings.

For 33 years I have watched "All My Children;" my mom would write little daily summaries for me when I was teaching and before VCRs. I have rarely missed an episode. In so many ways, the program had become a "constant" in my life and a very welcome diversion and escape when people in my life died (dad, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc) or I had to deal with other sadness or difficult times. Phoebe was such a superstar, a bit of the glue that held the show together. She was always "proper" and a lady. She's a legend! My condolences to the family.

To the family of Ruth Warrick,

As a preson who has struggled with the acting bug, it was always a pleasure to watch Ms Warrick in action. From "Citizen Kane" to "All My Children" she demonstrated how lucky she was to be able to bring that kind of joy to the world. On her passing I can only say that now she is truly a star. I wish her peace...and may flights of angels wing thee to thy rest.

I don't think I have ever enjoyed an actress playing a part as much as I did Ms. Warrick playing Phobe Tyler. From the beginning, with Erica Kane, to her daughter in law, Donna (the hooker!), she was always in the thick of everything going on. This lady was a wonderful actress and will be missed very much. If you ever watched one episode of All My Children and saw Pheobe Tyler, you will never forget her. Pheobe was the elegant meddlesome high society dame of Pine Valley. A real busy-body with her little fingers and nose in everything. What an actress but God has something else in store for her. He want her to work in his vineyard now. My condolences to the family. Work on Pheobe for the Lord.
