I just learned of Mark's passing and was shocked. Although we lost track of each other after high school, Mark was a great friend to me during the years we knew each other. It saddens me to know that his enthusiastic and joyful spirit is gone from us. I met Mark on Landfall II and we became great friends. We sailed many races and cruises together with the Holcombs, skied together with the Smiths at Tahoe and hung out with each other whenever we could. Mark opened my eyes to Ayn Rand, Robert Heinlien and a world that existed outside my conservative upbringing. I'll never forget when he told me that Myorca was pronounced Myorca and spelled Mallorca. Later, when I was in the Navy and spent a good deal of time there, it made it a lot easier to find the island. When we graduated from high school we went our separate ways. We met several times over the college years but I wasn't home much then and we lost contact. I never met Jill, my loss, but heard him talk about her often and it was great to know that he found someone he could spend his life with. My sincerest sympathies to those family and friends he has left behind and I envy you the many years that you were able to spend with him. Tom Ternes

I want to give my sincere condolences to the family of Mark, especially Clay...and Grant. I knew your whole family and what a great fam.....I still look at the house on hwy 24...I too lost my brother recently, on December 17,09 Ed Smith was driving his motorcycle to work as a high school teacher and a streetcleaner came out of a side street giving him no time to get out of his lane and killed him instantly.we are still in shock and deep grief....we loose our parents and it is difficult...very hard, my mom passed Dec 13, 06....but siblings are ruff as we are all suppose to grow old together. There is nothing I can say to make it feel any better other than its a journey and it looks like you have been here before with Brian. I am sorry to hear of his passing too. It was nice to see Mark and Jill were still together...and glad he was making his passion and dreams come true...as was my brother Ed, to me that is a comfort.
Take care Sungar family and know that you have made your mark in Orinda and Lafayette with all the beautiful homes, and your children will surround you with love and grandkids....
Take care, your friend always,
Peggy McKee

Mark grew up in Berkeley and Orinda and lived in the Santa Cruz area for most of the past forty years. His earliest important memories were from the year and a half that his parents, Bill and Gini, spent in Europe with their four sons when Mark... Read S. Sungar's Obituary
