Sally Dow Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2023.
Sarah Elizabeth Dow, known to everyone as Sally, ended her 2 1/2 year ordeal with cancer on November 19, 2023. She was born in Palo Alto, CA on September 5, 1957, to Dan and Kitty Dow. The oldest of four, she spent her childhood in California and Bellevue, Washington, with much of her adult life spent in the greater Seattle area. In 1988 Sally graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Microbiology. This was followed by thirty-three years spent working as a lab technician in the biotechnology space.

Sally was energetic and passionate in all her pursuits, with countless creative outlets. Upon discovering a new interest, she would dive right in, always curious to learn a new technique or experiment with a new combination of colors. An active crafter and doll club participant, she loved working with fabric. A talented botanist, she kept an abundant garden and went on frequent walks in the woods. A well-seasoned cook, she enjoyed experimenting with a new loaf of bread or pot of stew. An avid dancer, she enjoyed tap dancing and was an active contributor to the contra dancing community. She made friends across all her hobbies and jobs, carrying many of these friendships through to the end. Sally always looked on the bright side of life, and until the week before she died was eagerly anticipating future adventures and time spent with those she loved.

She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Tracy Whelen, husband, Andrew Graham, mother, Kitty Dow, siblings Susie Nakaki and Gordon Dow, siblings' spouses Tom Tralongo, Caroline Dow, and Mike Walls, nieces/nephews Karen Little, Mitchell Nakaki, Claire Nakaki, and Linus Dow, and countless close friends and extended family. She was predeceased by her father, Dan Dow, and sister Jenny Dow. Memorial information to be announced.

We must have met in 1993 or 1994 in a group for new'ish mothers. Sally struck me as someone who was completely comfortable being herself at all times - at ease with the ups and downs of parenting, so curious about how everything was made and worked (I'm pretty sure she had her own chickens before doing so was as much a part of urban life as it is now), making her own bread, canning and gardening. She was smart and capable, so completely down to earth. She shared gardening tips with me as I set about planning my own landscaping/berry garden in my small Shoreline yard, helped to host a baby shower for me when I was expecting my 2nd child and she shared her "dilly beef" recipe with me (still making it 30+ years later!) Over the years we would run into each other and have the most lovely conversations catching up on our lives. It's been a few years since I've last seen Sally and I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. I hope to live my life with the deep curiosity and authenticity that Sally did.

I once landed down in Portland for a conference, and Sally was down there, I think we crossed paths at the dance. I landed up helping her get around the city, doing stuff, and it was a lovely escape for both of us! I'll miss her!
