SALLY KALSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2014.
KALSON SALLY HINDA
Longtime Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter and columnist, died Friday from complications of ovarian cancer, at age 63. Her obituary appeared Saturday, September 27, 2014, in the Post-Gazette. Sally was known for her incisive writing and wit, which she used to highlight the concerns and predicaments of everyday people. Sally's great loves were people -- her large and loud family, her many close friends, and the newsroom. She is loved, missed, and remembered by her husband, Ed Feinstein; daughter, Zoe Feinstein; mother, Edna Belle Kalson; brothers, Irwin (Kathleen Rawl) Kalson, David (Susan) Kalson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, coworkers, and friends. Funeral Service Monday 12 noon at Dor Hadash Congregation at Tree of Life Synagogue, 5898 Wilkins Ave., Squirrel Hill, no prior visitation. Interment Homewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Professional Services by D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY LTD., Lawrenceville.

You can't have true Journalism without allowing for the full vetting of fact-based different points of view. Although highly argumentative, Sally always respected the right of "voice" with others. It would be interesting to hear her opinions on what parades as journalism today.

While Norman Lear's leading character Maude was fictional, Sally was the real deal. She was an agile-miinded, real force for progressive causes across the entire Pittsburgh region. Her interests were broad, however; in fact I chuckle to this day about one of her columns which targeted horrendous customer service. Sally stated that she felt like pounding the counter and yelling "how about some service here!" Amy Schaarsmith's letter aptly captures the human spirit and argumentative genius ( she would have been an excellent professor) of Sally.
My heartfelt sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues.

Sally will be missed by so many. What a loss for the community her intelligence and wit and analyzing our Follies was candid and refreshing. her writing on social justice and the human condition was always candid and right on. She enjoyed life and people.

My deepest condolences to the family.

I am so sad yo hear of Sally's passing. We were roommates at Pitt and shared many fun times and laughs. She played guitar while we sang broadway tunes. I since moved to Boston but knew of her columns and work for social justice. My condolences to her family.

What wonderful women who will be missed by so many... Rest in Peace

September 30, 2014

I always enjoyed Ms. Kalson's columns and perspective. I have two daughters near her daughter's age, and could relate to some of the issues she'd covered in past stories. My sympathy to her loved ones.

September 29, 2014

She will be missed. She possessed the ability to get directly to the heart of the issue and was not afraid to say what needed to be said. I sincerely hope that some young person will have the courage to pick up where she left off.

When I read of Ms. Kalson's passing, I felt like I had lost a friend. While I enjoy and read many columns on the Post-Gazette's op-ed pages, hers were the only ones I cut out and passed on to younger women. Through her writing, she tried to make all women aware of the continuing struggle to be treated as equals in our society. A truly intelligent and articulate voice has been stilled.

My condolences to her family, but also to the reading public, who also lost a great advocate.

I shall miss Sally Kalson and her warmth, wit, and wisdom. As someone who enjoyed her columns over the years, I often sent her a quick email to tell her, and I always received a response. Despite often serious health problems, she never saw herself as a victim, and continued to provide perceptive columns about Pittsburgh and life in general.

My sincere sympathy to her husband, daughter, mother, and extended family. Her loss is essentially theirs, but it is ours as well. May she rest in peace.

Sally was an icon in the Pittsburgh community. Her presence will be terribly missed. She was a woman's woman, a friend's friend, and an inspiration for young women because of her feminism, her outspokenness and her desire for fairness and transparency in an age where that is unfortunately rare. Sally, you will not be forgotten.
