Sally J Wright

Sarah Jeanette Wright, formerly of Griffin and Columbus, Georgia, did Friday, July 20, 2018 in Windsor, Colorado.
Sally, as she preferred to be known, was born in Sullivan, Indiana, February 19, 1919, the adored daughter of M. Bement and Esther (Toole) Hunt. She enjoyed a happy childhood and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was active in Girl Scouts. She was a good student and benefitted from a forward-thinking mother who encouraged her to pursue higher education.
After high school, she entered MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, where she majored in English. Her junior year she returned to Indianapolis and entered Butler University.
Sally was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She treasured the many friendships she developed there and stayed in touch with her girlfriends throughout her adult life.
It was In Butler that Sally met Orville L. Wright, a handsome young man studying for the ministry. They married at The Memorial Chapel, Harvard University, in 1943, shortly before Orville was shipped overseas to serve as Chaplain in the U.S. Army. While away, Sally worked for the telephone company.
After the War, Sally moved to Monmouth, Illinois, where she happily became Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) pastor's wife. She would laughingly joke that she had been a Methodist before she became a "Christian." Throughout her life, she witnessed her faith in a loving and forgiving God. She taught Sunday School, lead adult studies, taught her children by example to tithe, and participated in church and community life.
Sally and Orville moved to Canton, Illinois, in 1956, here, she actively encouraged her children's education in music, writing and drama with special focus on oral presentations. With her children growing up, she returned to her English degree and taught at the local community college with an eye to financially helping with college.
In 1967, the family moved to Griffin, Georgia, Sally quickly adapted to life in the South. She loved everything about her new life in the warmer climes and the close proximity to shopping in Atlanta. She continued her lay ministry at First Christian (Disciples of Christ) and enjoyed learning how to speak "Southern" from her many new friends.
In 1975, the Wright family moved to Columbus, Georgia, where Orville was called to pastor Central Christian (Disciples of Christ), Sally's faith was her rock. After losing her beloved husband, she became a deacon and elder to her church family. Well into her 90's, she continued to study the Bible and teach weekly Sunday school classes. A broken hip before Christmas 2014 initiated her next move to Windsor, Colorado, where she could be near her family.
In spite of her losses, Sally gratefully shared with others how God had blessed her life. Her refrain up until her death: "God has been good to me."
Survivors include two daughters, a son, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren: Margot J. Zeglis, Plattsburgh, NY, Son Michael (his wife Diane, their children Ashley and Ian), Colorado Springs, CO, and daughter Katie Boaz(her husband Mark), Annapolis, MD; Jeff Wright (his wife Janet, their sons Matthew and his wife Vivian, and Nathan and his wife Sarah); Wendy E. Wright (her husband Si Niswonger, their daughters Georgia and Amelia), Colorado Springs.
Sally was predeceased by her husband, Brother Charles D. Hunt, and her parents.
Sally's friends and family will remember her as bright, well read, independent and often clear spoken. She was grateful for every day even as her independence ebbed.
Sally will be buried next to her husband at Parkhill Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia. Friends are invited to attend the graveside service at 10 a.m. and/or a Celebration of Life Service at Columbus' Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2018.
