1917 ~ 2013
Salome Ikafilia Finau was born October 3, 1917 at Mu'a-Niuafo'ou, Tonga (Pacific Islands), the first of twelve children to Siotame Ikafilia Finau and Soana Tu'atangiketatau (Malafu) Finau.
On Wednesday, December 18, 2013, Salome, aged 96 returned to the Spirit World. She died peacefully in the presence of her loving family in Provo, Utah; with many of her 62 grandchildren, 144 great grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, 9 living children, and 61 in-laws by her bedside.
In 1935, Salome had married Solomone 'Ulu'ave (The first of twelve children, son of Sione 'Ulu'ave of Ma'ufanga, Tongatapu, and Meletonga Tai'i 'Atevalu of Petani, Niuafo'ou, Tonga). They raised twelve wonderful children to love God first and to love their neighbors unconditionally. In 1944 Salome Ikafilia Finau 'Ulu'ave was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Later they were sealed for time and eternity in the New Zealand Temple (1961), and served two full-time missions (1947, 1980). Currently sixty (60) of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are return-missionaries, speaking 13 different languages.
For a woman limited to a 6th grade education, she made learning a way of life. Salome spoke Samoan in addition to English, Tongan, 'Uvea, and her native Niua language. It is to her credit family members have attended The Church College of Hawaii, University of Utah, BYU, University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia University, and including Harvard University. In higher education Salome's descendants hold 57 bachelor degrees, 14 master degrees, 1 Phd degree, and growing. This is her enduring legacy! Salome genuinely loved life, learning, and serving others.
Salome is survived by her nine living children and other family members. 'Emeline 'Ulu'ave 'Unga (late Pita 'Unga), Kalisitiane 'Ulu'ave (Patiola Vaikeli), Pita Seti 'Ulu'ave (Sheryl Allen), Sione A. Dear Salome! I recall sitting in your home prior to your first visit to the NZ temple. What a special place that was! I am grateful to have known you and your husband in Tonga. You will always have a place in my heart. Emeline, Seti, Kalisi, Fololini, thanks for your friendship and for the many precious memories I have of my days in Tonga. You definitely changed my life for the better.
