DAYTON, Ohio — Salvatore "Sam" Auditore, 78, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly from Gloucester, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at Oak Creek Terrace Nursing Home in Ohio.
Sam was born June 15, 1930 in Gloucester, and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1950 and married Clara "Molly" Adams (also of Gloucester) in 1951. He retired in 1990, but continued working as a volunteer docent for the Cox Arboretum and as a substitute teacher. In his free time, Sam enjoyed golfing with his friends, skiing and held a private pilot's license. He traveled back to his hometown of Gloucester often and especially enjoyed attending the St. Peter's Fiesta. He was an avid RF boat enthusiast and enjoyed traveling, sketching, bicycling and square dancing with his good friend Elaine. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post #598.

I'm so glad we got to visit in Tampa a few years ago over breakfast. It was great to see you and chat about old times. I know the angels welcomed you into their garden and may you forever bloom in eternity.

As a best friend of my grandmothers, it seems necessary to note that Sam was one of the fatherly figures in my life whenever I was visiting Dayton. Even though he wasn't as outgoing as some, his presence was always appreciated because of his warm hearted personality. While I have no relation to Sam, his passing was personally tragic to me because I realized the mark that he had left on all of those who knew him, but mostly because of his presence in my life. While there are many people who assist you throughout life, it saddens me that I just started to realize Sam's contributions in my life.
My family and I feel very sorry for the loss. Our thoughts and our prayers are with you at this difficult time.
