CAROLLO SALVATORE ALFRED CAROLLO Lt. Col. USAF (Ret) Screen and Stage Actor September 20, 1916 - March 14, 2008 At age 91, Sal Carollo passed away on March 14, 2008, at BrookGrove Assisted Living in Olney, MD. Born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Carollo graduated from City College (now Baruch College). During his college years, Mr. Carollo became stage struck and acted in school productions. Despite his love of theater, Sal joined the Air Force in 1941, serving in England during World War II. Following the war, he continued his military service and was stationed in the Southwest US, Iwo Jima, and France. While in the Air Force, he rekindled his love of theater and acted in and produced many G.I.-sponsored productions. Sal retired from the Air Force in 1967 after 26 years of service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and returned to New York. He was actively involved with the 339th Fighter Group Association, a collective of veterans who served with the 8th Air Force. In New York, Sal embarked on his second career as a successful stage and screen actor. With membership in both the Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity, he appeared in pivotal roles in such films as The Godfather, Serpico, Lovers and Other Strangers, and Moscow on the Hudson. It was his stage work in Off- and Off Off-Broadway productions in NY that comprised the bulk of his credits as a character actor. Sal appeared in The Web and the Rock with Jose Ferrer, In addition to Pirandello‘s A Doctor‘s Duty and How to Rob a Bank, with fellow City College alum, Alfred Drake. At the historic Provincetown Playhouse in Greenwich Village, Sal appeared in a series of new Italian plays sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Entertainment. He also served as Executive Secretary of the Italian Actors Union. Outside of NY, he appeared in revival productions, including A Thousand Clowns, Cactus Flower, Don‘t Drink the Water, Once More with Feeling, Street Scene, The Madwoman of Chaillot, Picnic, and Born Yesterday. In addition to his stage work, he performed in soap operas, had cameo performances in Miami Vice, and was seen in numerous television commercials. In 1983, Mr. Carollo relocated to Florida, acting in regional and dinner theater productions, as well as serving as Manager of the Stages Foundation for the Performing Arts in Boca Raton. His love of theater influenced his wife, Marilyn, to take to the stage. They appeared together in Luigi Creatore‘s Remember Me to Herald Square, throughout southern Florida. Sal and Marilyn moved to Laytonsville, MD, in 2002 to be close to her daughter and family. In addition to Marilyn, Sal is survived by his nieces, Juliet Carollo and Sylvia Carollo Dare (Tom) and great-niece, Natalia Dare, all of New York; brother-in-law, Luigi Creatore (Joyce) of Florida. He is also survived by Marilyn's children, Carol Shoemaker (Richard Shaw); Paul Tracy (Carol); Vaught Tracy and three grandchildren. My uncle Sal was married to my second cousin Alba Creatore. She was truly the famous one between the two and was instrumentive in his work as an actor. If it wasn´t for her he wouldn´t have been as successful as he was.

Dear Uncle Sal,

Your gentle spirit and kind heart will be missed. I feel so fortunate to have had you in my life, through many milestones, and honored to have had you and Alba as my godparents. Your life will not vanish; rather it will live on in me and all those who love you. Until we meet in life again . . .

Love,
Sylvia
