Samuel B. Seigle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 14, 2025.
New York Samuel B. , N.Y. - Seigle Samuel B. Seigle, longtime professor of Classics and beloved mentor to generations of students, passed away on June 12, 2025, in New York City. He was 92.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 7, 1932, he was the only child of Jack Seigle and Edith Barmen. He earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University, and taught ancient Greek and Latin literature, history, and culture for more than 55 years-most notably at Sarah Lawrence College, where he was known for his deep knowledge, wit, and personal investment in his students.

Mr. Seigle championed interdisciplinary learning long before it was common practice, encouraging students to draw connections between classical studies and their broader interests. As one former student recalled: "He made education personal, and amazing."

Even in retirement, he continued to teach-hosting seminars, reviewing academic work, and inspiring those around him with his generosity of spirit.

When asked how he'd like to be remembered, he said: "It's not goodbye forever, it's hello again."

My new hero. Why isn´t all education presented joyfully like this? Pittsburgh generated another low altitude Giant and too many of us missed the roar of His engines as He soared overhead! JTSell

Who can tell the story of Sam's plan to hold class even though there was no electricity at SLC? (extension cord?)
