Dear Uncle Sam -
What a wonderful uncle I was blessed to have. You were always happy and smiling and I was your little Krackaleen as you called me. I loved spending time (all the time) at your house with you and Aunt Rose, and, of course, with Sue and the player piano. Oh, we always seemed to have fun at your house. I will truly miss you and coming to your house for every holiday. I sure do have many memories to cherish. Thanks for being a wonderful uncle and a great-uncle. Dominick and Julianna think your pretty special too! Love Kathleen, Dominick, Dom Jr., and Julianna

Sam would feed us everyday when we walked over from St. Joe's Mental Health. I think the sandwiches (always freshly made when he'd ask us to get him a loaf of bread off the shelf) were 75 cents. Usually he was too busy and he'd have us work the cash register ourselves to pay. If we were short--we still ate. A warm loving special kind of man--peace to your family........rich

My childhood on Townsend St included Donze's market and the family who took care of its customers.I remember Sam so well. Mr.Mariano and Nunzio were always pleasant, good to us kids. That Coke cooler outside the store, the ice cream freezer,those shelves inside,the deli case, the wonderful meats.
Memories from that time are treasured. Rest in peace,Sam. God bless you.--Adele LaDolce Penhollow-Jamestown NY

Sam was a neighborhood fixture and part of my lifelong memories of growing up on North Townsend Street. Mom would send me to Donze's for Italian sausage or chickens or provolone. I was too short to be seen over the huge meat cases, so sometimes I would stand there for ages waiting for Sam or Nunzio to notice me. Finally Sam would realize I was there, and he'd shout, "Maurillo! Wadda ya want?" And I'd recite the shopping list.
When I was ten, I wanted to work at the store, but Sam thought I was too young. Rose intervened. "Sam, don't you think she could sweep the floors or something?" He finally gave in and let me try out working at the candy counter. For about ten minutes. I couldn't make change or operate the cash register. Finally Sam said, "Maurillo, I'll pay you 25 cents to get outta here." Haha!
I still can see that place, with the wood-plank floors, the old pendulum clock on the wall, and Sam's parents going in and out of their apartment behind the store, with only a curtain to provide privacy. When the store closed, it was like the entire neighborhood shut down. If Donze's was gone, what else was left? Nothing.
Good bye, Sam. You did good. You were part of a legend. It would not have been the same without you.

My deepest sympathies to the Donze family. I had the honor of being Sam's doctor for many years in the 1990's. He was always a kind and gentle man - as physicians, we are not supposed to have favorites, but I can say now that Sam was always one of my favorite people. May God comfort his family in this time of loss.

Sue,
Sam will always hold a special place in our hearts. We have so many great memories.
Safely Home:
I am home in Heaven, dear ones:
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every retless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me
In the way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth-
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Even though I did not know you personally, I remember comming into the store and getting some great sandwiches and polite and prompt service back in the early 90's. You seemed to be a great, hard woking man...Syracuse lost a "real" man. Thanks for all the service you gave us. And to the family, he left a lasting impression on us all, even after not seeing him 20 yrs. May God be with you during this time. Francine Whitman (Nedrow NY)

Sam was my second cousin and even though I had not seen him in over 30 yrs the memories of him will never fade. When he would come home on leave during the war he would take me to Suburban Park and take me for rides in the car. He dressed up like Santa once to surprise me on Christmas eve. When uncle Mike had the farm he would let me ride on the tractor with him when we picked apples. He used to take me with him to various slaughter hoses when he picked up sides of beef for the store. He was a wonderful kind generous man whom I will never forget. May God rest his soul.

You can never say enough about my Uncle Sam. As a child it was a high point of the week going to Uncle Sam and Aunt Rose's house for a family gathering. Music always filled the air from their player piano they had in the basement. As a teenager my friends and I always knew that we had a place to go and eat at Uncle Sam's Store or house. It was alwyas known that the door of Uncle Sam and Aunt Rose was always open when we needed it. Thanks Uncle Sam for being such a great Uncle and Friend. You were always loved. Jim Iacovacci
