Samuel Oh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2024.
Samuel Yul Oh passed away on the morning of May 7, 2024 in Torrance, California. He was 93 years old.

Samuel was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother who dedicated his life to the values of faith in God, devotion to family, and a commitment to working hard throughout his life. Moments of tragedy and joy shaped his journey in life. He lived through war, witnessed national division on the Korean Peninsula, was blessed with the opportunity to emigrate for studies in the United States, and eventually navigated to success for both himself and his children.

Born on May 9, 1930 to parents Oh Chang Hee and Kim Yong Hyun in the city of Incheon, Samuel was the eldest of four children which included siblings Peter, Grace, and Joseph. Sadly, Peter went missing in action during the years when he and Samuel served in the South Korean army as combatants alongside the U.S.-led Allied forces during the Korean War. After capture and a miraculous escape from a prison camp, Samuel was able to find his way to safety and complete his military service.

Soon after, he emigrated from South Korea to the United States where he met his wife, Elizabeth Young Sook Lee, while both were attending college in Los Angeles as international exchange students. The couple was married for 69 years. They were fortunate to be given the opportunity to settle in the United States, making Southern California their home. They eventually became naturalized citizens and parents to four children, Angela, Crystal, Karen, and David.

Despite hardships when young, Samuel maintained a positive and thankful attitude throughout his life. As a longtime member and a lay elder of Los Angeles Korean United Methodist Church, he lived out his faith by treating everyone he met with kindness, compassion, and good humor. Always the gentleman, he earned the respect and affection of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Samuel passed away at home after a long period of incapacity. His transition was gentle and peaceful as he took his last breath while asleep and in the presence of family.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; their four children, Angela Oh (Ying Ming Tu), Crystal (Marshall) Lyou, Karen Oh Neal, David (Amy) Oh; grandchildren, Collin Lyou, Elyse Lyou, Samantha Neal, Michael Neal, Luke Oh, Camryn Oh; brother Joseph (Ho Chung) Oh, and sister Grace Oh.

Always in our hearts, always missed ... until we see you again.

A private family burial was held at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 28, 2024 at Los Angeles Korean United Methodist Church.
