Samuel Sorochan

SOROCHAN, Samuel (Sam) Roger Samuel (Sam) Roger Sorochan passed away on December 3, 2009 at the age of 76 years. Dearly beloved father of Cindy Sorochan and her husband Rick Huffman, Bruce and his wife Evelyn Sorochan, Murray Sorochan and John and his wife Lisa Sorochan, beloved grandfather of Lauren and Cody Burrell, Juli and Elisa Sorochan, Denver Sorochan and Ian and Charlie Sorochan. Sam will also be greatly missed by six sisters; Stella Kuz, Mary Roberts, Ruth (Floyd) Johnston, Jeanette Sorochan, Katie (Rod) Buxton, Annie (Henry) Lazarenko, two special cousins; Jenny (Roy) Rasmussen, Mary Elias and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and the mother of his children, Shirley. He was predeceased by his parents John Sorochan (1965), Helen Sorochan (1980), three brothers Bill (1952), Steve (1967) Hilory (1999) a sister Irene Lucas (2005), three infant brothers and two infant sisters. Sam was born on the farm in Glendon, Alberta on May 22, 1933 where he was raised and educated. He came to Calgary in 1951 and worked in the General Superintendent's office of the C.P.R. In 1956 he began working at Leyden's Funeral Home and then purchased the business in 1967 which he owned until his retirement in 1998. Over the years Sam was active in many organizations including the Lions Club, International Order of the Golden Rule, and a founder of the Alberta Funeral Information Service. Sam was a very caring and generous man. He went above and beyond to help the many families he served and contributed generously to many Calgary Churches and Charities. Relatives and Friends are invited to meet for Prayers at St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Church (404 Meredith Road N.E.) on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with The Very Reverend Taras Krochak officiating. Divine Liturgy will be served at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (704 - 6 Street N.E.) on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with The Reverend Serhiy Harahuc Celebrant. Interment will follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. If desired, donations may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (1331 - 29 Street NW Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2) or the charity of the donor's choice.
