SANDRA COSBY Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 14, 2011.
COSBY, Sandra Barber, age 59, of Chesterfield, died August 12, 2011. Sandee suffered from unremitting cancer for 17 years. One tough lady, she fought this curse with a vengeance, but at the same time handled it with unsurpassed grace, fortitude and selflessness. In addition to her obvious physical changes - a dozen major surgeries and years of treatments left her with numerous chronic disabilities that most people who knew her were unaware of. Sandee could not have dealt with her many challenges without her family's abiding love and devotion, especially from her husband, David. They cherished one another, were the loves of each other's life, and best friends for over 40 years. Sandee also adored their sons, Andrew and Daniel; and her sister, Diane Barber. She was unabashedly proud of them. Sandee and her sister were true kindred spirits. Sandee felt the worst part of each new diagnosis was having to break the news to her family. Sandee is also survived by her cousin, Carol Stefanec; life long family friend, Teri Ann Tingen; and close friend, Bob Davis. Sandee will also be missed by Diane's companion, Bob Johnson; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Nancy Cosby; and nieces, Heather Cosby and Kim Haas (David). Sandee was an avid flower gardener. She had a deep love of nature and all animals, especially dogs and songbirds. She even had a fondness for small rodents. Her sister affectionately dubbed her "Ms. Audubon." Among her favorite sounds were whippoorwills, bobwhites, and her family's laughter. She was a talented writer, photographer, and public speaker. She could be a wonderful friend and a formidable adversary. Throughout the years her civic activism and ability to rally others to action often resulted in preserving the rural integrity of a little piece of Chesterfield. Sandee was complex and a study in contrast. She liked many genres of music, including blues, Cajun, old country, old gospel, old rock, Shubert and Tchaikovsky. She loved rustic antiques, weathered barns, lace, Austrian crystal, and Bohemian porcelain. She loved to dance. Sandee was fortunate and grateful for her team of MCV oncologists, whose dedication, knowledge, and skill helped keep her alive for so many years. The many radiation technicians who treated her at Massey Cancer Center displayed an unlimited amount of patience. Sandee was especially fond of her surgeon of 17 years, Dr. Larry DiNardo, (who alternately made her laugh, curse and cry). She also held a special place for her radiation oncologist Dr. Shiyu Song, and his nurse Kathi Judy, who always made sure her many personal requests were fulfilled. Sandee was a dedicated supporter of animal welfare organizations particularly rescue shelters. In lieu of flowers, Sandee's family would be honored if donations would be made in her memory to the Southside SPCA, P.O. Box 66, Meherrin, Va. 23954. This non profit is a well run, non euthanizing shelter serving 12 rural counties. No formal visitation is planned and a private family service will be held.

Know we have you in our prayers and are thinking of you at this difficult time. Sandee was strong and brave - a fighter and we can all learn from her. She'll always be with us in our heart and has found peace now in heaven. Find strength and comfort from each other and the Lord, and call on us if we can do anything to help. We're here for you.

Dave, Andrew & Daniel,
We are thinking of you and you remain in our thoughts and prayers. You and Sandee have always had a place in my heart. The card she sent for the wedding recently was not only touching but reminded us to treasure love and every moment together. I know she did exactly that in life - treasure love and every moment. It was so wonderful to have spent the time with her and have the long conversation we did at my wedding. I know she is missed but find strength in the Lord, comfort in the wonderful moments spent together and stand firm in your faith knowing that "The family of God and love are still united with each other, even beyond death." - Romans 8:35-39

David, Andrew and Daniel,
Please know that you are in our prayers at this most difficult time. Please know that we are thinking about you and if you need anything at all, let us know. We admired Sandy over the years for all of her strength and courage through the long, hard battle that she fought. Inspite of all that she had endured, everytime we saw her at the many functions over the years, she always had a smile on her face. She will be truly missed.

Sandee was a dear friend to all of us at the Southside SPCA. We treasured her friendship. We have her sweet, loving cat, Sylvester and will work hard at finding him a loving home like he had with Sandee.
Her beautiful painting of a Golden Retriever is on our wall in the lobby and dedicated to Sandee Cosby.
Sandee will be missed.

To David and family,

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time. My heart goes out to you and the family for your loss.

Sandee was a very special person.
I admired Sandee for all her courage and strength in fighting her cancers over these many years. I last saw her right after she had been diagnosed the first time. I remember when we used to live next to each other, before I left home. We would play together at times, ride the school bus together and just being neighbors. My Mom and Dad (Noel and Barbara Kidd)loved her as their neighbor and friend. Sandee always asked about our family when she and Mom would talk on the phone and mom would tell us. We asked about her when we talked to Mom. Daddy was so proud of the picture she framed and gave him for his birthday last year of his WWII Ship. It meant the world to him. That's just how Sandee was, always thinking of others.

Sandee will be sadly missed. I wish I had known how ill she was as I would have come by to see he the last time I was home in June.

I know she is in Heaven with Dickie, Pam (Kidd) and her parents. She will continue to be surrounded by love. She may be gone but she will always be with you all each and every day. She will leave lots of signs, she's OK. She's with God now and no longer suffering. R.I.P. Sandee, you will be missed.

With Deepest Sympathy,
Beth Kidd Koziol
