I just learned of Ms. Mallory's death. She was the greatest literature teacher that I have had at any point in my education including college. Furthermore, she was the greatest teacher that I had up through college. I remember her giving a moving reading of Poe's The Raven when I was in middle school. It has stayed with me all of these years as have many of the things she taught me. Like my parents, she also valued classic film, and if there was an important Golden Era movie or a showing of Macbeth on PBS she would suggest that we watch it. She encouraged us to use the Oxford Companions to English and American literature to learn more about the background of the works we studied. I loved her classes. She was also proud to be a Christian. She told us that the three greatest works in the history of the world were the Bible, the Iliad, and the Odyssey. I had her for English and Spanish at Ryan. She was working on her Ph.D. when she taught me. It was like being taught by a college professor. She was a classically minded scholar, and she truly cared about each of us. I am honored to have been her student. I thank God for Ms. Mallory.

I had Mrs. Mallory for English in eighth grade and for Spanish in ninth through twelfth grade. I remember her reading out loud to us in English class, very rapidly but with lots of emotion. You'd think a bunch of 13 year-olds wouldn't have been into that, but we were. She was gracious and kind, and the world was a better place because of her.

Señora Mallory was an outstanding teacher. Her kindness, sharp wit, and love for her students will never be forgotten. I saw her about 10 years ago, 30 years after she had me in high school, and she remembered me right away- and my Spanish name! Classy lady

I am so sorry to hear of Senora Mallory´s passing. I was her student of three years in Spanish, at Ryan High School, between the years of 1982-1984/85. She certainly kept us all accountable ... but always led with gentleness and support. I also recall that she was quite the Fashionista ... and even had the flair of a Fashion Designer. I wish my photo was better, but this was taken at the Ryan Graduation Ceremonies for the Class of 1985. Rest in Peace Senora Mallory; love and prayers to your family.

Mrs. Mallory was one of my first professors in the education department at ODU in the late 90's. During a particular class she mentioned having lived in South Carolina. I used to make it a point to meet with my professors one on one so they could know me on a more personal level. I used to think it would help in the case of close grade. When Mrs. Mallory mentioned being from South Carolina that was my cue to schedule a meeting with her. I told her that my mother was also from South Carolina. Well it turns out that they grew up together for a short time in Greenville and Mrs. Mallory's dad was my mom's pastor. They were both the same age and while they were not best friends they knew each other. They ended up having lunch with each almost 40 years later. I tell this story all the time. Mrs. Mallory taught me a lot about education but that meeting with her had more impact on me than any other event in college. It taught me to take chances, to dig a little deeper with people because the degree of separation is not a wide as it may seem. RIP Mrs. Mallory.
