Sarah Beaman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2011.
Rev. Sarah (Nancy) Beaman died peacefully in the arms of her children on November 13, 2011. Sarah was born in Pontygwaith, Wales, in 1921 to Thomas and Winifred Griffiths. She trained as a teacher and supported her mother and younger sisters after her father's death. While in Sheffield, England, during World War II, she met Don Beaman, the man she would eventually marry. His best friend married her sister, and Sarah's family followed, immigrating to America in 1947. Sarah continued her teaching career at Friends Central School in Philadelphia, eventually becoming Head of the Lower School. Sarah left to marry Don and relocated to upstate New York, where she raised her two children prior to returning to work. In addition to teaching, Sarah worked as a free-lance writer, publishing a column in a local newspaper, as well as many articles in teaching and religious magazines. Sarah also published a children's book set in Wales, entitled "Dragon Mountain". After retiring from teaching, Sarah returned to school, completing her Master's in Divinity and fulfilling her lifelong dream, as she was ordained as a Methodist minister at the age of 65. Sarah embarked on her new career with enthusiasm, leading congregations in Wissinoming, Lawndale, and Catasauqua, PA, where she and Don found a home among many loving friends. They celebrated their 50th anniversary there prior to Don's death in 2007. Sarah loved music and sang with many well-known choirs in her youth. She was a proud supporter of her daughter's performances and will be greatly missed in the audience. She loved word games, crossword puzzles and was once a contestant on Jeopardy. Though proud of her many accomplishments, nothing made Sarah happier than her family and her friends. Sarah maintained lifelong friendships and regularly kept in contact with the many people she had met over the years. Her intelligence, creativity, warmth and genuine caring have had a huge impact on those that have been fortunate enough to meet her through her teaching, ministry, or social network. She was very happy to relocate to be near her children, spending her final few years in the Wilmington area. Sarah is survived by her daughter Wynne, son Tom, sister-in-law Betty, 21 nieces and nephews and their families, and 7 grandcats. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, sisters Ethel and Clare, sisters-in-law Mary Ruth and Lucile, brothers-in-law Frank, Harmon, Jack, Herb, Chris and Bill, and nephew Chuck. A memorial service will be held at Sarah's former church, now Bethany Church, 429 Walnut Street, Catasauqua, PA 18021 on Saturday, December 3th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief at http://www.umcmission.org/Give-to-Mission/Search-for-Projects/Advance-Project-Search.

Sarah was the most wonderful person I have ever known. She helped me more than I can express during the loss of my son. We remained close friends and enjoyed both her and Don at many holiday dinners, etc.

I enjoyed her staying with me when visiting Allentown and my visits to Wilmington.

She is now an angel in heaven but was also an angel here on earth. I loved her so much and will miss her.

She was so fortunate to have Tom and Wynne with her. She was so proud of her children. They have my deepest sympathy and prayers. Dee

I was a pupil of 'Miss Griffiths' in the third, fifth, and sixth grades at Friends Central School. I remember her lovely voice as she read different books to our class, some well above the accepted reading levels at that time. All of us learned to read for pleasure, an activity that stayed with us throughout our lives. It was wonderful to see her again at our 50th high school reunion and exchange letters afterwards. My heartfelt condolences on the loss of someone who has had such a profound influence on so many people.

Pastor Sarah was an amazing woman. She was friends with my gram (Edith Bartholomew) She always went out of her way to help anyone! We exchanged letters and cards after she moved with Wynn. I have a copy of her book Dragon Mountain! I hope her and Don are dancing to his harmonica music!! If there was one woman that graced this earth with caring, understanding, grace, love, compassion and patience it was Pastor Sarah!! Sarah I love you and thank you for all you have done for me, for my gram and for the church. We will always miss you but NEVER forget you. You were one in a million!!!

Nancy taught my class fifth and sixth grades at Friends' Central (1952-54). She was a wonderful teacher, encouraging our individual interests and talents, exciting us through the reading of books -- or reciting the plots of movies -- she thought we would enjoy -- once or twice bringing in a television so we could watch important events of the day. Nancy was the first person to recognize I had promise as a writer, arranging for the publication of one of my stories in the Upper School's (7th-12th grade) "Literary Supplement, a major feather for one's cap. It took me a while to put her encouragement into action, but I was always grateful for the confidence she instilled in me. Nancy"re-contacted me ten or more years ago, when she learned of a book I'd written and we remained friends. At my class's 50th reunion, in May 2010, she honored us by attending, thrilling many of my classmates who had held her memory fondly in their hearts as I did.

I shall never forget Aunt Nancy, and will remember her as someone who always endeavoured to see the good in people. Although she lived far away "across the pond" and I saw her rarely, I shall miss her not being in the world! x

Dear Wynne, Tom and extended family, I have so many amazing memories of your dear parents. I will always remember them with great love. Your sweet mother was especially important to me. She mentored me through my own ministerial journey, encouraged me at every junction of that walk of faith. She confirmed my oldest son, sang with me, prayed with me, was a wonderful friend and supporter. It was so wonderful to see her a few months ago. She will truly be missed. Her wisdom, humor, caring nature meant so much to so many. My prayers are with you all. Sandi Becker

Dear Wynn and Tom, We were very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. We were very privileged to have been guests at your parents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration. We are also very thankful for the wedding service she performed for our daughter, Karyl Stelger and son-in-law Al Doss. We have and will continue to hold dear many happy memories of the time we spent with Pastor Sarah.

Your Mom was a super lady, guys. We really treasured our time and times with her while we were in Catty. I was honored to be there to conduct your father's funeral service but unfortunately we cannot be there with you this time, but be assured that our prayers and fondest wishes are with you. I take pleasure in trying to picture what the reunion between your mom and dad might look like. Two more unique people I haven't known.
Your mom was always very sensitive to the possibility that her presence as a former pastor at the parish might be a problem for me, as is often the case, but I always responded that I considered her an asset and a blessing for me.
God bless, Bill & Gail Stelger

Wayne and I are so sorry for your loss. Sarah was not just an inspiring spiritual leader, but also a good friend to those who knew her. It was wonderful to see her again at my father's memorial service and sad that so soon after we will be attending her own. She will be missed.

Wynne and Tom,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was such a wonderful lady. I will treasure my memories of her. As a child I remember Aunt Nancy always smiling and laughing..we always looked forward to your visits! She made my mom so happy...they would giggle like little girls and usually get themselves into trouble with the "other adults". May she rest in peace! Love you both!
