Saul Shuller

Last Saturday, September 17, (one day before the 11th anniversary of Saul Shuller's passing), I had the privilege of being at an event of about 100 people and was seated at a table with Barbara Hahn, Saul's daughter, and her husband Dr. Jack Hahn.
I was given the opportunity to say a few words, so I spoke of the wonderful human experience of friendship, and the importance of having a friend that understands other human beings. My words, to a great degree, were inspired by the late Saul Shuller and his understanding of friendship. Since most of the people attending were over 50 years of age, I mentioned that he had owned the popular Wigwam restaurant in College Hill. I paused after saying that to note a number of guests nodding their heads, being familiar with the Wigwam. Of all the things Saul Shuller knew in his lifetime, friendship was one of the things he revered.

I met Saul Shuller when he was 90. His daughter, Barbara Hahn introduced me to him at a Doctor's office.
Her introduction was simply: "Dad, I want you to meet a friend of mine."
Her dad's reply was simply: "You are a friend of mine until you prove otherwise."
Those ten words stuck with me ever since, over 15 years. It enabled me to realize what a remarkable human being he was and what an incredibly full life he must have lived. Think how often we meet new people and in only ten words can one capture the essence of the person they just met. My only regret was that I didn't meet him until he was 90.

To the family of Mr. Saul Shuller, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I worked at Shuller's for 4 years, all through high school and 1 year beyond.May God bless you all. I pray all is well with Mr. Leo Shuller.

My family sent me Mr. Shuller's obituary - I was sorry to hear of his death. The Wigwam was my family's favorite restaurant. My High School graduation party was held there, as well as many other special events with family and friends. I always had a meal there when I returned to the city. My sympathy to the family on the loss of your loved one.

My mother was a waitress at Shullers during the Ted Klluski days. I had my first steak there for my 13 birthday. Great place and people.

So sorry for your loss. "Uncle" Saul was such a sweet man. He was such a comfort to Sid at the end of his days. I have so many wonderful memories of The Wigwam including my wedding and the story Sid liked to tell about his Friedman nephews being bribed with steak to leave the buffet line. My thoughts are with you all.

My mom was so upset when she heard (after the fact) that Saul had died. Sid and he were so close and Saul was so good to my dad during his own illness. I laughed out loud when I read about his not having to sit through another Bengals game as I know Sid would be thinking the same thing. One small comfort....Sid will finally have someone equally fanatical about sports to kibbitz and watch games with.

Dear Mel and Family,
So sorry to hear of your fathers passing. He sounds like he was a real character. You all will remember him fondly. A smile will light up your face each time you say his name. He's telling stories to all those who will listen in heaven, Lou is probably one of them, he always enjoyed a good story teller.

I didn't know him, but I was so moved by the obituary I wanted to write something. He sounds like an amazing man.

I have such fond memories of both your mom and dad from the days at Riverfront when my parents' seats were a couple of rows in front of your parents'...they were such a nice, handsome couple...always friendly and smiling. We send our deep and sincere condolences to the Shuller family members. My fond memories are many of Saul and the family at the Wigwam-a celebration dinner after my first piano recital when Saul gave Virgil permission to serve me a Shirley Temple with my #9 sandwich; the lunch with my dad the day before my daughter was born; the box of candy sent by the Wigwam family to my husband that year as he served in VietNam. The Shuller family members were always there to greet you with a warm smile and frequently, one of Saul's funny stories. I am grateful to have spent a little time on life's path with this memorable, gentle man.

We were very sorry today to hear of the loss of your father. My first memory of your Dad was when my parents took me to the Wigwam for a "special occasion." As a child, he seemed like a gentle giant to me.

The next memory was when he moved the family to the "walled fort" on Miramar in Roselawn.

As the years rolled by, we ate many delicious dinners and attended many family celebration parties in the downstairs party room.

From all we knew of him, he was a mench. We hope that you find consolation in your wonderful memories........

What a flood of memories Saul's obituary brings back to me. My family were fairly regular customers at the Wigwam, and Saul was the one my sister and I looked forward to seeing (we were 10 and 8 years old). We always needed to "explore" the Wigwam when we were there {that translates as "running around"), and Saul was so tolerant and generous--and firm! As we grew up, he was still our friend.

I am so pleased to know that he shared a long and happy life with his wife and family, a life filled with love, joy, good health, and peace. My blessings and condolences to all the family.

The business was a pleasure to patronize. The food was great and the service always tried to please. The hand of the management was evident even if it did not place the plate in front of you. The memories remain and the longing to return for a visit from Arizona is strong. May your shared life time of family sustain you and keep him refreshed in your daily life. via con Dios

Our family remembers Saul and his family from the days when we would go to lunches and dinners and the many celebrations that we had there. We miss Shuller's Wigwam and the family. It brings back so many wonderful memories to all of us. Our deepest sympathy to the Shuller family.

He put smiles on people's faces right until the end. It was a pleasure and honor to know this great man.

Saul was a good man to work for.

I'm so very sorry to hear of the loss of Poppa Saul and apologize for not being able to make the service today. Poppa Saul will be greatly missed and the holidays will not be the same without him around. I will cherish the fond memories during Thanksgiving at Barbara and Jack's home, I so enjoyed listening to him play the piano and share that talent with his great grandchildren. My thoughts and especially my prayers are with all the family that he loved so very much at this time and pray for your peace and comfort.
