Scott Austin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 1, 2015.
WINSLOW - Scott Blaine Austin died at home in Winslow on July 29, 2015, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on December 15, 1955, in Brunswick, Maine, the only son of Blaine Leroy Austin and Margaret Brown Copp Austin. Scott grew up in Durham, Maine, and was a graduate of Brunswick High School. Scott later graduated from the University of Maine.

Scott is survived by his wife, Joyce Blakney, son Matthew Austin and daughter-in-law Kristin, as well as grandson Chase. Scott also leaves behind his mother, Margaret, and his sisters, Sandra Austin, her life partner, Mark McCormick and their daughter Kalista, and Peggy Brick, her husband, Ralph Brick, and their son, Dana. Scott's uncle Donald Austin, his wife Claire, their children Robert, James, and Barbara, and cousins Peter and Brian Austin survive Scott as well.

As a boy, Scott spent many happy summer weekends and fall hunting trips with his grandparents and other family members at their camp in East Sumner, Maine. It was here that he formed the strong sense[BF1] of family unity that influenced his view of the world, and also where he developed a lifelong love of the Maine woods and its wildlife. As an adult, he and Matt spent many weekends skiing the mountains of Maine.

As a teen, Scott began taking painting lessons from the famed painter, Alicia Stonebreaker. This experience blossomed into two lifelong passions for Scott: art and Monhegan Island, Maine. He went on to become a prolific and gifted artist, and spent many blissful days on his beloved Monhegan, painting, bird watching and walking the trails with Joyce.

A gifted writer of haiku and intrepid Morning Dog Walk Reporter, Scott loved spending time outdoors with Joyce, and dog, Baxter.

Scott was employed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for 27 years and was a very active member of the Maine State Employees Association (MSEA), becoming a member in 1989, a steward in 1998, and a Chief Steward this year. Scott also served the MSEA as Vice President from January 2012 to December 2013.

A celebration of Scott's life will be held later this summer. Gifts in Scott's memory may be made to the Humane Society Waterville Area, from which his beloved dog, Baxter, was rescued in 2004.

Services are under the care and direction of Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St. Waterville, Maine.

I've known Scott since he started at the DEP. My fondest memory of him was when he and Matt took my son and me to Fenway Park. He got a parking ticket for parking where we wouldn't have so far to walk. He was not only a super co-worker, he was my friend and a wonderful human being. The world is a better place for his having been here.

RIP Scott. So sad that you didn't get to enjoy your retirement years after giving so much of your life working as a public servant to the people of Maine. I for one appreciated your wisdom helping out in our Union and giving what you had to the Democratic process. May your family have piece of mind that you were a great man and people looked up to you. Thank you brother for all you did.

Shakespeare was talking about Scott the other day when he said that Scott's life was gentle; and the elements so mixed in him, that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, THIS WAS A MAN!
