Scott Ballou Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 24, 2024.

Scott Harold Ballou, age 71 passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024. Scott was born on August 30, 1953 in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Paul H. and Ruth (Cook) Ballou. He was a loving and devoted father to his sons Kyle and Kevin, and forever cherished best friend to his former wife Debbi Templin. Dear brother to Dr. Stanley Ballou (Dolly), Steven Ballou (deceased) and Shawn Ballou, and sister Nancy Ballou (Don Frederick) and a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. Scott was a friend to all and especially cherished his lifelong friendships from his youth that spanned until his death.

His family moved to the Cleveland area when he was a child. Scott graduated from Garfield Heights High School where he was Senior Class President, prom king, and a state ranked wrestler. He went on to graduate from Ohio University and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Early in his career he worked as an Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor before entering private practice. Scott practiced law for 40 years and retired to South Florida in 2019.

He was very close to his sons; they were the light of his life, and he loved traveling with them. His favorite places were Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Key West, Florida. He traveled through Europe and in 2018 went on an adventure to Thailand, where he finally rode an elephant. During his travels he loved to buy local art and pottery, and he always came home with beautiful and thoughtful gifts for his family. In his retirement, he loved living near the beach, swimming and riding his scooter; enjoying what he referred to as "the endless summer". He will be forever missed and loved.

A Celebration of Life is being planned and will be held in Cleveland at a later date.

Scott and I met in tax class, walked to commencement and studied for the bar exam together, and remained good friends over the many years. I am very sad to learn he passed in December.

Scott was a strong lawyer and fearless litigator, whose loyalty and care for friends and those he loved was limitless. He had a heart of gold and will be missed by those who were lucky to know him. My sincere condolences to his entire family.

I saw Scott the last time at a family reunion in Breckenridge. He was friendly and happy to be there with his sons. After the supper he did not attend other events. He told me he just wanted to spend time with his sons, a true indication of his character.

My condolences to the Ballou family. Scott was my teammate in high school wrestling as well as in my homeroom for six years and was always the first to congratulate me when I won the match. He was always an encouragement to me in that way. I always saw Scott as a decent man with integrity and he treated all others with respect regardless of who you were. I will miss you Scott. Rest easy with God.

Some of my most cherished memories of Scott revolved around hanging out with his friends and brother in the basement man cave in Garfield Hts. Even thought they were 3 years older than us they never acted superior and were always welcoming. Scott and his friends turned me on to some of the coolest music that if not for them I would have never experienced. R.I.P. Scott. U Rocked it!

Scott and I were wrestling teammates from 7th grade thru senior year. One of our goals was to make it to states together in Columbus. We did, along with Jack Huber and Mike Picone. We watched and analyzed the competition from the Fieldhouse floor. We spoke of that time at every reunion and class event. He will always be our team mate, a fine father, and a damn good wrestler.
