Scott W. Gowell

I moved before getting to have this man as a teacher, but when I heard the news/saw this picture, there was a rush of recognition and fondness. His kind energy was undeniable and had an impact, even from a distance. What a lovely soul and man! It would have been a true gift to have him as a teacher. We were all blessed that he shared this earth with us, and I'm sorry he had to go. One thing I can say with confidence: he gave more than enough in the time he was here. I wish for more men like Scott Gowell in the world. May his spirit radiate through us all.

Scott and I share the same birthday, which we discovered when i was enrolled in an ELHS adult education class back in 2001. We were voted "most happy-go-lucky" in our 1966 ELHS yearbook - and i was just glad to be in the same picture with him! What a dear man, and reading all these posts makes me realize how many lives he touched, and made better. LOVE IS ALL THAT MATTERS - and this is how Scott lived his life. Blessings to all of his family.

Scott was a great teacher and mentor of young minds. He had very relaxed approach to life, I always admired that. I try and use this same approach in my own life even today.
I thank him for all he has done for the Auburn school system.
We miss you Scott.

Scott was a wonderful person in every way. I knew him as a neighbor and a fellow educator. He would always think of others first, he loved his family and was a dedicated son of Laura and George and loving brother to Patty. His wife, daughters and grandchildren will miss him terribly but he has led by example and that will be of great comfort to them.

Scott was one of my heros at summer where he taught me water skiing, which became one of the loves of my life!
He was calm yet incredibly inspiring and confidence boosting!

I am so saddened by this. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Gowell as my CPS teacher at Walton. I will never forget the experience I had with that great group of teachers. A role model for all educators who crossed his path. I know you will be meeting up with the others who have left us too early.

I feel very fortunate that I got to work with Scott and know him. He was a wonderful human being. He always put the learners first. He was a truly careing person. He was taken way to soon and will be greatly missed.

I'm not sure I have met a kinder, more gentle , fun loving person in my life. His happiness spilled onto people making them smile as he entered the room. His talent and curiosity was exciting to watch and so inspiring. He will be missed by so many, my heart aches for the whole family for this loss is a great one.

Li, Kristi and Lisa, I was so saddened to hear the passing of your husband and Dad. Scott was a man who helped me become the man I am today. Scott was a man I looked up to and respected very much. In fact Scott was the man I aspired to be like. He was the big brother I never had.
I will always be grateful for what Scott and your family gave me when I most needed it.

My heart goes out to the entire Gowell family at your great loss. As I bear the same last name, I can not tell you how many times people have asked me if we were related. I was always so honored because people thought very highly of Scott as he contributed so much to this community!

I am so shocked to learn of Scott's passing! What a great husband, father, and true friend he was! So generous, helpful, and kind. What greater attribute can one have than kindness! I will miss him and never forget him till we all see him again alive and healthy in God's coming new world!

Li - It has been a few years since I had the privilege of sharing politics with Scott over breakfast at Charlie's. I enjoyed his probing questions and his seasoned perspectives. He was a pragmatic thinker with a passionate grasp of the possible. Although our paths crossed less often recently, I will truly miss the opportunity to renew our conversations in the future. Li, Will not be there as I will be out of state, but want you to know that Scott was the ultimate gentleman of education. He was so attentive of every student. He always worked with every colleague and always added a smile. Loved his interest in helping older students in his later career life endeavors. The best. Fond memories!

I am so sorry for your loss. You all are in my thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.
I was a student of Mr.Gowell's at Walton. He was one teacher you knew you could go to with anything that was bothering you. All of his students were "his kids" and you felt it. I again got to learn under and get support from him a few years later as one of his students while he was director of Auburn adult ed as my senior year I was pregnant and only needed my english credit to graduate. He was cheering me on and so proud of me when i finished my 2 classes to graduate. I will never forget Mr. Gowell. He will always be one of my favorite teachers. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

He was such a good man. He was my teacher in history and my principle at Adult ed. He was always smiling and nice to me in school and one of my high lights in school. High-school was a hard time for me and I was failing in highschool, and he really uplifted my spirits whenever I saw him. Thanks for being there for me and lots of kids like me Scott. What a great legacy you have left behind.

Scott Gowell was well liked by his students and respected by his fellow teachers.
It was a pleasure to know him and to work with him.
Scott was a natural born teacher in the classroom, a great assistant principal, and he inspired many students to achieve success as an adult education leader.
Scott was very fair minded and always pleasant, positive, and approachable.
Scott was one of the best!

So many fond memories of skiing into the street on Nottingham road!! I think my brother has movies of that, to this day!!

Very sad to hear of Scott's passing. Scott was my track coach at Walton in the late 1970's, and I have very fond memories of the man. He was always very supportive and just a really great guy. He will be missed.

My most recent association with Scott was through Auburn's Adult Education program.
As a retired Auburn teacher returning through "Scott's" AAE program, Scott was everything the job as administrator required .... and much more. His concern for enabling the best possible learning opportunities always left me grateful for his way of working with colleagues and students alike. I've been a teacher since 1969 and consider Scott to be among the Best of the Best educators I've had the privilege to know.

I'll never forget Scott and Uncle Charly having a wood splitting contest when Scott and Li came to visit Mom in Friendship, Maine. Brains against braun. Wood was a flying and both were amazing. It was a great time had by all followed by drinks, a lobster dinner and Aunt Gretes" desert. We always will miss you Scott. Mom loved you like a son. Happy Trails... I had Scott for a teacher my freshman year at Walton where he talked talked me into doing track. I totally enjoyed my time in his class and on the track field. Great guy and he always had a warm smile where he made it a point to say hello.

Scott will be missed by many. I remember Scott both from childhood in the Lake Street neighborhood and in our adult lives as fellow educators in the Auburn School System. He leaves a wonderful legacy!

Scott was a classmate of mine at EL '66. He was a good student and athlete and had so many friends. His personality was like a magnet. We reconnected when I served on the Auburn City Council 1994-2000 and School Committee when he was promoted to Director of Adult Education. I always looked forward to his passionate plea for more funding at budget time and to hear of his enthusiastic plans for the forthcoming year to improve educational programs for our entire adult community. May you rest in peace my friend. You truly made a difference in Auburn and statewide.

Scott was passionate about education and a great advocate for Literacy Volunteers and family literacy. He was a wonderful person and a pleasure to work with. All of us at Literacy Volunteers want you to know how much we appreciated and respected Scott. We are so sorry for your loss.

I am privileged to have known Scott as a happily enthusiastic, kind and generous man. In his role as Director of Auburn Adult Education, he was the best boss I ever had. He truly listened; not only to colleagues, but also to the many adult learners he helped on their way to success. He was a person who was endlessly curious about just about everything, who inspired others to follow his lead and fully embrace life. My deepest condolences to his family, whom he loved so dearly.

They say you meet someone for a reason, a season or a lifetime...We met Scott his first year of teaching at Walton school as rowdy teenagers, became friends as Auburnites, and lastly as neighbors in Buckfield. We are so blessed to have known this wonderful man and God has certainly gained an exceptional angel. He will truly be missed. Mr. Gowell has come to mind many times through the years as one of my finest teachers ever. I had him for civics at Walton. He truly enjoyed teaching and interacting with "his" kids. Mr. Gowell was probably one of the best Civics teachers I ever had. I had a chance last fall to see him as I was at the transfer station. Very kind man. Scott, may you rest in peace.

It certainly was a pleasure meeting Scott. We had some heated conversations and some belly laughing times at breakfast. Heaven gained another angel.

Mr Gowell taught me Civics Class, and he was the most interesting class I had and treated me very nice. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Scott was a dear childhood friend. Many hours spent playing in his driveway on Lake St. and having secret special lunches in the building next to his Dad's store on Hampshire St. I am sure that heaven has gained a very special angel. I had Mr. Gowell as a teacher at Walton in 1984. He was such a loving caring teacher who made all his students feel loved, respected and valued. I had Mr. Gowell for Health Class and Cultural and Political Geography in 1983-1984 at Walton School. We sure gave him a run for his money in health class :) He was always there with a smile and had a fantastic sense of humor. Truly a great teacher. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

Scott was a very dedicated, caring man. I enjoyed each and every interaction that I had with him while teaching in Auburn. He was such a ray of sunshine, and he simply radiated positive energy! My thoughts and prayers are with Lee, his family, and the friends that were dear to him.

Cannot begin to express my sympathy for your loss of this wonderful man. One of the big joys of my life was working with Scott at Walton School.
