Scott SMARDON Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Aug. 18, 2012.
SMARDON, Scott Macrae
September 20, 1950 - August 8, 2012
Scott will be lovingly remembered by his wife Terese Brasen and her sons Dashiell and Langston and by his brother Donald Smardon and his wife Viviane Johnson. Scott was predeceased by his parents Alan and Kathleen Smardon.
Scott was born in Montreal and grew up in Hudson, Quebec, where he enjoyed early success in both track and football. He studied history and economics at McGill, majoring in China and Japan. He then began a very successful career as a fundraiser, raising millions for non-profits and educational institutions throughout North America. Scott worked on behalf of socially responsible philanthropists, helping them further education and leave lasting legacies.
In the late 1980s, he raised over $12 million to build the University of Saskatchewan Agriculture Building. He then raised $16 million for Upper Canada College, before joining Vancouver's St. George's School, where he created the school's first fund development function and raised over $24 million. In 2000, he moved to Edmonton to become Director of Principal Gifts at the University of Alberta. He was Chief Campaign Strategist, laying the groundwork for a highly successful campaign, which eventually raised over $500 million for the university.
Cremation and a private family memorial have taken place.

I just saw Scott Obit. Scott was a great friend and mentor when I worked at the U of A. Great guy!

This is very sad news indeed and shocking. It is unfortunate in many ways, that in this day and age, families are so globally scattered making it difficult to maintain contact. Truthfully, I did not know Scott beyond the days of my childhood, but in the praises from others I can see that he was a wonderful man. My sincere condolences to the family.

I just learned of Scott's untimely passing and I am so very shocked and saddened for his wife Terese and boys, and brother Donald and his wife. Scott was my cousin and though I had't seen him in years, I often thought of him and hoped he was doing well
in Edmonton. I remember him as a person of great enthusiasm
who loved to connect with people. May God bless him and the family he has left behind.

"Scotty", "Dr. Doom", the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, and we had plenty of laughs! I knew Scott from Molson Hall during the McGill days and he will be sadly missed by us all. Love to you Terese, Don and family. Elaine Hantman
