Scott Swaney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 21, 2024.
Scott Alan Swaney, 55, [Highlands Ranch, CO] an extraordinary individual whose life was marked by astounding endurance, unwavering love for his daughter, incredible resilience, and great friendships, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on December 24, 2023. Scott is survived by his daughter Summer Anne Swaney, mother Kathryn Case (Swaney), father Thomas Swaney and brother Christopher Swaney.

Scott was born in Wichita, Kansas on July 22, 1968. His early years took him through Newton, KS and Rancho Cucamonga, CA where he gained his first notoriety as an endurance athlete. Rumors of his legendary stamina preceded his arrival at Memorial High School in Elkhart, IN where the swim team already knew about "The California Kid", an awesome back-stroker that had just transferred in from Rancho Cucamonga. Scott lived up to his reputation, making it to the State Meet and then as a stand-out collegiate swimmer at Ball State University.

Scott's feats of endurance continued well beyond college. As he moved from Indianapolis to Chicago and ultimately to Highlands Ranch, Colorado, he competed in and won countless triathlons, adventure races, ultra marathons, and road races of all distances. Scott's racing took him all over the world including adventure races in Patagonia, Scotland, South Africa, New Zealand, and many other places. A constant in Scott's life were the life-long friends he made wherever he lived or raced.

Most important in Scott's life was his daughter, Summer Anne. For the last 13 years, Scott poured his life's energy into SA with the same passion and enthusiasm once reserved only for athletics. With SA at his side, Scott grew into a devoted, loving father and tireless cheerleader. His active presence in her life and unwavering support were his greatest achievements.

Scott survived a serious bout with cancer 7 years ago, fighting through grueling treatments with his usual positive attitude and seemingly endless endurance. Rising from the depths of illness, Scott not only reclaimed his health but proved to be an even stronger competitor, more dedicated father, and better friend.

Known for his big personality, sense of humor, and an abundance of captivating stories, he was often affectionately deemed a "goofball" by those who knew him best. Those who skied with Scott knew he had not mastered all sports. The "Elkhart Tuck" was exhausting to watch, but the conversations on the ski lift were unforgettable. Scott's legacy of endurance, friendship, and laughter will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched, leaving an irreplaceable void in the hearts of many.

Scott's Celebration of Life will be held at Living the Dream Brewing on March 16th at 11 AM. The brewery is located at 9150 Commerce Center Cir #300, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129.

Scott's running community will also be celebrating him by participating in the HRCA St. Patrick's Day 5K the morning of his Celebration of Life. All are welcome to join as we will be running in honor of Scott who really enjoyed participating in this race to kick off his race season. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Summer Anne's college savings. Please go to this link to donate: https://www.ugift529.com/ and enter the UGift code: S2A-K7G. Donations are (state) tax deductible for Colorado residents only.

Rest in peace, Scott. Your passion for living fully, love of SA, and the memories you've left behind will forever resonate in our hearts. You truly were the Superman of your own destiny.

I met Scott several years ago when he joined Firepit Runners. We are a local group that embraces all runners from beginning to elite and we celebrate each and every victory. Scott and I immediately bonded over our IU background and Indiana roots. This picture is from the annual Firepit Runners Friendsgiving at my house in November. It was the first time he had attended this event. I obviously had no idea it was the last time I would see him. He was planning to run the Snowmass Ragnar in June with us as one of 8 on the relay team. I am devastated by his passing but I know he lived his life and his love for Summer every day.

I'm broken hearted as I've just heard this news. I first met Scott when he kindly introduced himself and corrected me on the pronunciation of his last name as I had mistakenly said it over the loud speaker at an HRCA race. I was proud to correctly say his name countless times over the years since then as he took the podium. -DJ WEST

Made many fun trips to Warren Dunes to run up Tower Hill with Scott. We always wondered if my car would make the trip there and back but we would go anyways. There were always friends from EMHS to hang out with on the beach. Rest in Peace my friend.

About 12 hours before he had gone to sleep, I had seen my dad cry personally with me due to the death of our rabbit. Forever may you and Thumper sleep

My first memory of Scott is meeting him through a friend, he was known as the California Kid in high school. We became best friends through swimming. He made me laugh every time we talked on a weekly basis. I lived with him after college as we waited tables together to make ends meet.
