Sean Eric Nagel, 43, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Shelley, Idaho. He was born to his loving parents, Kurt and Portia (Galinski) Nagel, on May 10, 1981, in Park Ridge, Illinois.

In his short life Sean experienced many things. Growing up in Romeoville, Illinois, Sean learned to play multiple instruments, often self-taught. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and enjoyed the many camping trips with his troop. He also played soccer and was on Romeoville High School's football and track teams. He was a member of the high school ROTC program and went on to join the US Navy where he completed Nuclear Power School and was accepted into the Naval Academy, Annapolis MD. And somewhere during all of that he also found time to become a certified skydiver, enjoying time in the sky with his dad.

After leaving the Navy, Sean continued to travel and try new things, living in most parts of the contiguous US. His love of the outdoors and adventures drew him West. In Idaho, Sean worked with nuclear safety crews for the Idaho National Laboratory. He then moved to Los Angeles, CA. During his time there he studied at Second City Hollywood and did some commercial acting. While in California he also earned his Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California with a focus on Mental Health and a sub-concentration in Military Social Work.

Sean returned to Idaho with his cat, Pidgeon, where he was able to be around his loving family of Aunt Kathy (Doug) Collet and cousins Grant, Kaitlyn and Kase on a regular basis. He continued to develop new skills like learning German and French, playing the guitar, archery, painting, woodworking, knitting and home repair. His interests were varied and plentiful. His practice had become to fill his life with experiences, not things. Last year he spent time traveling and hiking through Europe, visiting eight countries in forty days.

While back in Idaho Sean began his counseling career as a Licensed Master Social Worker with Tueller Counseling Services. He also became a Master Mason with the Eagle Rock Masonic Lodge in Idaho Falls. Sean was practical, hardworking, and deeply committed to those he loved. He brought a solution-oriented mindset to all aspects of his life whether it was decorating for a wedding, fixing a toilet, or helping someone get through a rough time.

Sean is preceded by his father, Kurt Nagel, uncles Doug Collet and Dennis Costello, and grandparents Betty and Jesse Barajas, John Costello, and Rose (Schlemmer) Galinski.

Sean is dearly missed by lifelong friends and family members including his mother, Portia Nagel, and sister Mercedes (Patrick) Nagel Murtaugh.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at Stockman's Restaurant (1175 Pier View Dr. ~ Idaho Falls) on Friday, November 1st between 5pm and 7pm.

I only met Sean a couple months ago, but we became self-declared best friends immediately. Sean's wit and kindness will stick with me forever. I am so grateful he came into my life, even just got a short while.

I remember Sean from RHS- I was a grade behind him, but come later we were involved in some of the same groups. Never really talked but I just remember his face, smiling.

Fair Winds and following seas on the next journey, Sean. We have the watch. My humblest condolences to the Nagel family.

Sean was one of my oldest and dearest friends. I first met Sean in Cub scouts and became fast friends. We also played soccer and football together. Then after high school we hung out a lot until he moved west. We grew out of contact with each other, but the kind words of the people that knew him and those he helped brings me joy in such a tough time. R.I.P old friend.

Sean did not lack confidence! I remember when he was a plebe and he came to my room to hang out since I was an upper class. He truly believed in the mantra at the academy "You rate what you skate". There he was a freshman, plebe with no care in the world of getting in trouble by my peers or me, he was something special. I will miss Sean, he was a cut from similar cloth as myself, both from Romeoville, did the navy nuke thing, both had the pleasure of attending a small boat school in Maryland. You will be missed by many, forgotten by none.
