SEAN RUANE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 22 to Jan. 23, 2014.
RUANE
CAPTAIN SEAN MICHAEL
Age 31, a highly decorated combat veteran, from Kennedy Township, gave full measure of devotion in service to his country on Jan. 7, 2014, while instructing the next group of U.S. Air Force Helicopter Aircrew about how to conduct the mission he loved with such passion, the mission of Combat Search and Rescue, and ultimately demonstrating the Air Force Rescue motto..."these things we do, so that others may live." He was born on October 11, 1982, in Pittsburgh. He was the beloved husband of Rachel (Roderer) Ruane; cherished son of Michael and Marcia (Boronsky) Ruane; proud father of Liam; loving brother of Caitlin; maternal grandmother, Dolores Boronsky; also loved by many extended relatives along with devoted friends. Sean graduated in 2000 from Montour High School and in 2005 from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, studying International Relations and Research Meteorology. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force active duty and began undergraduate pilot training. Sean first mastered the UH-1H Huey helicopter, earning his pilot wings in 2007, and officially became a U.S. Air Force Pilot. Enrolling in the 512th Rescue Squadron's HH-60G training class, he learned the HH-60G Pavehawk helicopter and tactics that would enable him to save lives in combat as part of the 41st Rescue Squadron. He was deployed four times to the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, he quickly advanced to Aircraft Commander and then on to HH-60G Flight Lead. He was then selected to become an HH-60G Instructor Pilot, and teach others the mission of Combat Rescue. Joining the 56th Rescue Squadron in England, he further advanced as an Evaluator Pilot, and was subsequently selected as the squadron's Chief of Standardization and Evaluation section, ensuring the aircrew within the squadron upheld the highest professional and aviation standards. He was again deployed to Afghanistan in summer of 2013 as the Flight Lead of a formation of two Pavehawk helicopters and 14 aircrew. He led his formation in combat while deployed and in training while at home, all the while working on a master's degree in American History. His potential was recognized with his new promotion to Operations Group Executive Officer. Sean's major awards and decorations include: 17 Air Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Combat Action Medal, two Meritorious Unit Awards, four Outstanding Unit Awards with a Valor device, five Expeditionary Service Ribbons with Gold Border, two Iraq Campaign Medals, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals, and the Small Arms Expert (Rifle) Ribbon. Due to snow storm along the east coast, visitation Thursday 2-4 p.m. has been cancelled. Visitation will be Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at COPELAND'S MOON TOWNSHIP, 981 Brodhead Rd. (shuttle services will be provided). Procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. for service on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Christ Church at Grove Farm, 249 Duff Rd., Sewickley, PA 15143. Dr. John Guest, celebrant. Burial will be private in Resurrection Cemetery with full military honors. Family suggests donations in Sean's name be made to the That Other's May Live Foundation, www. thatothersmaylive.org.

Dear Sean,
Liam and I continue to honor and remember you, as does our entire family. Your brilliant smile and remarkable legacy are never forgotten. All who knew you, loved you, and love you even still. You would be so proud of Liam for who he is becoming, accomplished, funny, thoughtful, an amazing and loving son and brother, so very much like you. I press on, with you in my heart always, as you told me to do in your final letter. You asked me to keep living, so I continue to press on, with God guiding us each and every day. You are greatly missed, and our love for you is never-ending. Knowing and loving you was and is a gift that I will always cherish. Thank you for every moment we shared together. I keep loving, I keep joy at the center of my life, and I know that I will see you again. That is how you lived, and that is what I am teaching Liam.
That Others May Live.
With love always, Rachel.

Tonight, a group of Friends and Family got together to fly lanterns in your honor Sean, (and Chris, Dale & Afton too) Time has gone by, but it seems like yesterday that we received the news of the crash...Sean, your kindness touched so many people and so many remember that. Every day, there is another person, that brings up how you could light up a room with your humor and love. Just like the Squadron that you flew under, 'these things we do that others may live,' will go on forever. I miss you more than you will ever know, and hurt each day that you are not here. Your son, Liam must know how good of a person you are, and learn that the community celebrates your heroic life. Just know I love you, and will do my best to preserve your legacy. I love you and miss you so very much, tears just do not stop sometimes. Love you with all my heart- mom

Thinking of Marcia and Mike

April 16, 2016

We have traveled to the sight in the UK of your last time on this earth my beloved son. The hero, Bernie, that stayed with you that night, placed his arm around me, to comfort me as it was ever so hard to take in what happened to you & your comrades on the helo that night. A plaque was given to the visitor center at the bird sanctuary, to honor ALL FOUR of you. Another of your favorite teachers at your school just wrote about you and it was kind of her. My pain is because you are not here to enjoy your wife & child, family & friends. And the pain never stops. It should be told that as a Fearless search & rescue pilot you are credited with saving 131 American lives, plus coalition lives & lives of the countrymen where you were deployed. Know that I am proud of your legacy, yet the void of your absence is sorrowful. I love you & miss you every second until I can hug you once more. with tears in my eyes, mom

April 9, 2016

Dear Marcia I think of you so very often throughout the months and with those thoughts Sean comes to my mind and heart. I still can see that precious little boy coming into the library --that beautiful smile those full cheeks that twinkle in his eyes always doing his very best. You and Mike raised a wonderful son very respectful, kind, and happy. And what a remarkable young man! God Bless you all. With love Debbie Abel

Thinking about you Sean and your family. Christmas is a time to be together and celebrate life. My hope is that your presence is felt by your loved ones and they will take some comfort in knowing you are always with them. Because you are loved and you gave love, the bond can never be broken. Merry Christmas to the whole Ruane family. God bless you all.

Sean, it is almost 1 1/2 yrs of you not being with us & each day seems more unbearable. My heart hurts for you as the earthly things I know of, you will not participate with your son, wife, & all of us. To those that travel the memorial highway named in your honor, it is a reminder of your service, courage, humility, & zest for life. My baby, my child, my son, my grown, married young man,
I love you dearly, always. mom

Marcia and Mike - I wanted to let you know that you and your family have been on my mind and in my prayers as you approached this date - I wish there was something I could do or say to make this better for you, but you know there isn't. I can only let you know that I am standng there with you - if you need a hand, a shoulder, or someone to listen. Take care - be gentle with your selves. Sean is remembered.

We had a beautiful memorial mass on March 9th for you, my son. It was held in the historic St. Mary's in the Rocks, with the stained glass windows. The music were songs you liked. Ava Maria, played & sung by a young man, bagpipes played Amazing Grace & many more. The new picture of you in your Air Force 'blues' with a smile that lit up a room, your eyes magnificent as you looked right at people. Your family & friends came to celebrate you. Your grandma was pleased. Father Ryan & cousin Paul spoke, & you, Sean, my beloved son, were remembered at this service for the hero you are. I miss you so very much. love, mom
