Foge Fazio, perhaps most well-known for being the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings during the 1998 season where the team went 15-1, lost his battle with leukemia on Wednesday night at the age of 71.
Fazio was Minnesota's defensive coordinator from 1996 to 1998, and was also the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2001 and 2002. Prior to that, he held numerous other coaching jobs, including the head coaching position at the University of Pittsburgh from 1982 to 1984. He also served as the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame under Lou Holtz, and was also an assistant coach for the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Falcons, and New York Jets.
Fazio had officially retired from the league after the 2002 season, but was brought back by the Vikings as a defensive consultant in 2005, the last year of the Mike Tice era.
We offer our condolences to the Fazio family.

I was going thru some old photos of
my Coraopolis High School Junior Prom, the year was 1967 and there was a photo of my Dad and Mom, (Danny & Norma LaRocco), my now Father and Mother-in-Law, (Bob and Eileen Niedergall) and Mr. and Mrs. Fazio and Mr. and Mrs. Orlando (Fats) Falcione all sitting at a table at Mt.Nebo Country Club, they were chaperoning our Prom. No matter what, Mr. Fazio always made time for us his students.
Later on in my life, I had the great privilege of call him Foge.
He never forgot where he came from, he never forgot his friends and he was never to busy to got out of his way to say hello and ask how you were.
He was a man that cared about his family, his friends and his town.
Foge, you made Coraopolis and Coraopolis High School a better place and I thank you for sharing a part of your life with me.
You will be missed. I know that God has a Coaching Position for you on his team.
RIP Foge

Foge was so kind to others I wonder if he really knew just what a wonderful man people really thought he was?. As with so many others, it was his smile that will live within our hearts. He was very kind and so loved his family, so proud of you... Kris and Vince. For all you were, Foge, for all you became and the paths you travelled along the way.

To The Fazio Family,
I am sure that you realize Foge will be remembered as a positive influence for so many, in and out of football. His accomplishments at the high school, college, and professional levels will not be forgotten. Neither will his charisma. And he was always proud of being from Coraopolis.

Kleine Family
December 14, 2009
Dear Fazio Family,
My brother Wally Kleine played football for Coach Fazio at the University of Notre Dame in the early to mid-eighties. Coach Fazio was one of the most influential and genuine figures in both my brother's, and my family's, life. Coach Fazio's positive spirit and his love for the game was evident to all that knew him.
I send condolences on behalf of my father, William Donald "Bill" Kleine, my belated brother, Wally Kleine (1964-2008), and all of the Kleine Family.
Please know that Coach Fazio will always be remembered as someone who was very special to Wally and helped him in more than just the game of football.
The Kleine Family sends our love, support, prayers, and strength to you during this time of grief. We all know that Coach Fazio and Wally are laughing together, in peace, on that great football field in the sky.
With warmest condolences,
Emily Kleine and

For all those who wrote of Foge, plus the cherished memories of others, it is to the measure of this man that each felt their own special connection to him.
From the pick up games as young boys, on a corner vacant lot in Cory, where the offense ran uphill, to the competitive playing field at Coraopolis H.S., 1954-56 shared with Foge, Orlando Falcione, Mario Lacenere, Donny Francis, and others, Foge was not only the team captain, but our mentor, our friend. This person, even in his youth, was not only one heck of a football player, but a helpmate to all with his constant encouragement, critiques and compliments.
Long ago, but only yesterday, when I moved to California, Foge managed in his busy schedule for me to join him at the PITT-UCLA game 1969. Over the years, I like many others from Cory, followed his career, and we talked, wrote and picked up wherever we left off.
The last time I saw him was two years ago at the class of '57, 50 year reunion. Along with Norma, he stopped in....he looked great and as always, we reminisced, laughed, and of course, talked football. In retrospect, it seems that on that night, Foge and several of us, had one "last huddle", one "instant replay" of the good times of our youth, along with memories of Coach Letteri pushing hard for the"Italian boys" to set a "good example".
But as for Foge, football may have been his pleasure, but serving humanity was his passion, his real game.
From the moment I opened the L.A. Times and read of his death, I have been shaken. I did not know he was ill. God bless Norma and his family, may the fine memories expressed by so many, help sustain you in your time of sadness.

Norma and family,
Even though many years have passed by, Coraopolis roots grow deep. Our family is so saddened by the loss of such a wonderful friend. Foge had such a gift of making everyone feel like a million. He made me feel that way every time we saw each other. Certainly that was just one of many traits that made him such a great man, husband, father and coach. He will be missed.

We pray the Lord will bless Norma and family with peace for this tremendous void, and joy of knowing his reflection of the light of Christ in the lives of others. Tom Raymond (PITT '62-65) and family

To The Fazio Family,
My deepest sympathies with the passing of Coach. Words cannot express the sadness I feel. The Pitt Family lost a great Pitt man. As I reflected back on my friendship with Coach, I realized a lot of the friends I have in my life, probably would not be if it wasn't for Coach Fazio sending Coach Moore to recruit a kid on the beach in New Jersey..in a basketball town no less, where the Football team won 8 games in 4 years...with me as the starter for 3 of them at QB. Not exactly a winner in terms of wins. But he offered me one and then used his italian charm to get invited over for homemade spaghetti and meatballs that my Italian Mom made-the rest was History. It really is like a Wonderful life as some of the greatest memories from College on to now in my life all centered around Pitt games and the Pitt Family...and my greatest ones, my 2 boys, again, would have never been born if not for my association with the University of Pittsburgh. Foge was truly a blessing to me and so many others. He was not just a Coach but a friend. When I needed people for a Charity Golf Tourney raising money and awareness around colon cancer, who was there leading the Pitt contingent, Coach Fazio. I like so many others, will never forget Coach Fazio for teaching us how to be better on the Football Field and to respect and Love Pitt, but also how to treat others and be leaders and successful off the field. Coach Faz, thank you for touching my life and letting me be a part of your. You are gone to soon...you will be missed tremendously. May God Bless you and you beautiful Family

The following is an excerpt from "Fr. Rich's Reflections". Fr. Rich is Pastor at St. Joseph Church in Coraopolis. He recently attended the Coach Fazio's funeral, and had these words to say in his latest column that he writes for the web:
On Monday, I attended the large funeral of Coach Serafino Dante 'Foge' Fazio. I was glad to represent our parish family for such an occasion. Instead of a capacity filled stadium crowd-it was a packed church. The large number of people who attended his funeral from all walks of life was a great testimony of the respect, admiration, affection, and appreciation of all the lives he touched-on the gridiron and in life. There were many people of all ages present. It was a most meaningful experience to gather to share the gift of faith in this holy Advent season. Christ's light scatters the darkness that death creates. Our greatest victory comes through Chirst's death and resurrection-may Foge rest from his courageious battle with liukemia.
One could not miss the towering Head Coach Dave Wannstedt and his wife Jan in the congregation. There were past, present, and future football players in attendance. There were coaches, colleagues, and administration from the University of Pgh. as well. Foge's son, Vincent delivered a finely crafted eulogy that laced football stories, wisdom, humor, and family experiences that touched the entire assembly.
A motorcade of police officers lined the route as we left the church en route to Resurrection Cemetery. The procession of cars held traffic patterns at bay as we mourned a hometown hero. Finally, we reached the cemetery to offer the prayers for the interment of Foge. While I was standing alongside Deacon Robert C. Sabatelle, M.D. watching and waiting for the mourners to enter the chapel with Foge's body, there was stillness and hushed silence. I found myself trying to bring God's comforting hope and healing through the prayers of the church for such a great crowd. The real 'touchdown' of our lives is that Christ became one of us and is 'Emmanuel'-God with us now and forever!
The Pitt community, our local community and our church community rejoices and gives thanks to God that Foge left behind such a powerful legacy. May God's compassionate healing fill the ache in our hearts through his passing to heaven. Neil Simon playwright wrote-"If you go through life without experiencing pain, you probably have not been born yet."

To the Fazio Family,
I offer my deepest condolences, and thank you for sharing Foge with me.
I had the honor of Coach Fazio bringing me into the U of Notre Dame family and being on the 1988 Championship Team. His lessons and inspiration, on and off the field, has had a tremendous impact on my life. Foge's class and style made winners out of everyone he touched. While he is missed, be encouraged that this powerfully influential man has made such a positive change to the world, by just being himself! This is absolutely, a life well lived...

I am a Pitt man and played for Foge some 40 years ago. I can honestly say that of all of the Pitt people I have gotten to know since then he was simply the greatest as witnessed by these Guest Book entries. Every time I ran into him over the years he always had kind words and he made one feel special. Not too many humans have that God given quality. Foge my friend you will be missed, but never forgotten.

To the Fazio Family: I am deeply sorry for the loss of your dearest husband and father, Foge Fazio. I became personally acquainted with Foge after the sudden death of Todd Joseph Becker -- a linebacker and member of the Panthers football team -- my boyfriend and someone with whom I was in a serious relationship. He died the night before the team was scheduled to depart for the Cotton Bowl in December 1982. Foge, Alex Kramer, and others, were supportive, kind, and generous to me at the time of my loss and throughout my years at Pitt. In fact, I will always be grateful for the warmth and kindness that Foge showed me personally -- and the Becker family -- well after Todd's passing. He was a dear friend and he will be missed! You are all in my daily prayers.

One of the brightest stars we've ever seen. I think he was supposed to be a pope, but knew he'd reach more his way. He wasn't one of my role models as a kid and his linebacker, but my only one. He was loved by everyone because he felt blessed.

Dear Norma and Family,
Your husband and father "Foge" and the Lanza brothers shared many adventures at Mt. Vernon Ave., McKinley School, and Jr. and Sr. High.
I can still smell the aroma of salami, cheese and homemade wine at Foge's parents' store! The strength and values Foge inherited from his good Italian parents put him on the path to greatness. Thank you Foge for putting Coraopolis on the map!
Foge touched all our lives with his positive personality, smile and laughter.
I am sure God has no problem finding Foge a helmet and jersey with his name on it for the Angel's team in Heaven.

I clearly remember "Foge" as standing out & being special during our time at Pitt. He (football) and I (basketball) 1956-1959. He was a very happy and fun guy who was nice to everyone. It has been 54 years but he is still a person I remember fondly. Although I have not seen him for the past 54 years, I have followed his wonderful career.
I believe that a successful life is determined by how many lives have been touched by "Foge" Fazio. The record is clear. God is saying to "Foge" " Well done good and faithful servent" !
My deepest sympathy to the Fazio family. In your sorrow, you can feel good about the life this special man lived.

Now in heaven, Foge is giving a chalk talk to Knute Rockne, Pop Warner, and Woody Hayes. They are asking a lot of questions, but there isn’t one he can’t answer.
I want to be 15 again and playing touch football at Coraopolis Park with Foge and my other friends. Once I hit Foge so hard, it knock the wind out of him. All he said to me was, “You better hit like that when the season starts.” I hope I didn’t let him down. Those were the best days of my life.
Rest in Peace, Coach. I will miss you.

Coach has been a friend since the first day I stepped on the Pitt campus in 1979. Foge took a lot of young men during the impressionable years of their lives and turned them into men of character. What greater quality can one person contribute? He truly insprided as both a coach and friend. We were blessed to have him full time during his final years in the place he called home - Hail to Pitt.

Jan (McLain)and I also met in 1984 at the house in Oakland during the "84" Christmas party. Foge was a wonderful warm and no nonsense guy who alwalys stoped whatever he was doing to extend a warm handshake and to make sure we were OK . Our thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you Foge!

My deepest sympathies to the Fazio family. Foge was a super Pitt teammate with laughing eyes and a ready smile. He always had the right words of encouragement, joke or laugh when you needed it. Following Foge through the years makes me realize that he will be missed by many. Godspeed, Foge.

Dear Fazio Family,
Our hearts and prayers go out to you during your time of sorrow. But please know that Coach Fazio was one of a kind. He had an air about him that made everyone around him feel special. He used to say to me everytime we ran into each other..."always a pleasure". I can say it was an honor and a pleasure knowing him.

Coach Fazio Family,
Foge was my D-coordinator my senior year at Notre Dame. I played linebacker and I must say I never had more fun and learned more and worked harder all in the same year. He had a way of making the unpleasant pleasant. And coming into the football offices and seeing his copy of red white and green on his desk is one of my great memories of the passionate brilliant great friend and coach Foge! A great leader who left his mark on many young men-his legacy continues. . .

Dear Norma and Family, There are so many memories of you and Foge. I worked with Foge at PITT and with you Norma at PPG. Foge in his subtle way always made me feel like I was special. He was special. It was a real honor and to have known Foge, truly one of the good guys. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We live in Houston and cannot attend the services, but know we are there in spirit. As President of the Cornell School District, 1970-1975, I had occasion to deal with Foge as the professional he always was. The whole school district was proud of Foge and his accomplishments. Additionally I grew up around 2 blocks from Foge and his parents store and remember him clear back then. I watched him progress through the college ranks and professional ranks and will always have the highest respect for him. I will always remember him as the professional he was and will miss him dearly. James E. Flowers, Coraopolis

To The Fazio Family
Please accept my deepest sympathy at the loss of a truly terrific guy.
I believe I was in one of his first classes at Coraopolis Jr. High School when he was a teacher there. He always made our classes interesting. Anytime his name was mentioned, or he appeared on television I was and still am very proud of the fact that I knew him and that he was from CORAOPOLIS.
My last memory of Foge, and in hindsight this was just Foge; was in August 2009 at the Class Reunion for the Class of '68. He made it a point to meet and greet everyone of us there and to talk about the 'good times' at Coraopolis High School and spent time with his players.
He was truly a GREAT GUY.

Dear Norma
In my years at Pitt and as a member of the Pitt football Family as a player and GA Foge was always my friend and when he left and returned at the airport, he would always call me and I would give him one of my company cars
when I worked for Volkswagen of America.
Big smile always kept me laughing. When my Mom died he was there for me and my family. If I had not meet him I would not be a blue and gold panther
I currently live in California and will not be able to attend the services.
Thank you, Foge God bless

I remember the look Foge gave me after I suggested that he consider running the "wishbone" at the Monday Morning QB Club that were held every Monday during football season at the William Pitt Student Union after we loss to ND in the fall of 1982. As a fellow "pizon' I knew that he did not have to say a word...Thank you for being a part of some of the greatest memories that I have today. Hail to Pitt!

Sincere Condolences To Foge's Family and Dearest Friends. I followed his career in the 80's and enjoyed Pitt Football all the more because of him. To me he was The Ultimate Pitt Panther Man! To hear him on the radio the last year was so exciting. Again he had me enjoying the game all the more. You can tell he was smiling when you listen to him thats how much enthusiasm he had for the game. Pitt won't be the same however his memory will always resonate. Thank you Foge! A true blue and gold fan!

dear norma and family,
We were saddened by the news of Foge's death;it resulted, however, in good memories of the past. The excitement of his being named the head coach at Pitt that took us to the Fiesta and Cotton Bowls, and all those home and away games during his tenure. And those summer celebrations for the coaches and their families at our home in Allison Park when all had the opportunity to get to know each other better and the children enjoyed themselves in the swimming pool. Also, when Foge was coaching at Notre Dame against Pitt and after the game many of his former players came to see him and they greeted each other with such enthusiasm and joy, some even in tears.
We will miss you Foge but will always remember you.
Love, Don and Jane Martin

I had the fortunate pleasure of being coached by Coach Fazio at Notre Dame. I was a walk-on on the offensive prep team and Coach Fazio always made me feel like I was as important as anyone on the team. He was a great man and a great coach. God bless him and the entire Fazio family at this difficult time.
