I met Sy when I volunteered to help work on Eugene McCarthy's Presidential Campaign in 1968. I was 14 years old. I knew Sy well for the following 8 years. He influenced me greatly. He taught me to fight my own prejudice every day. He taught me to do what I think is right. He honored my intelligence and being. He knew I was technical and interested in him and what he did for a living. I met him for lunch at ABC and he showed me his videotape machines and how they worked. I loved him and he knew it. It is most fitting that I should search for him on a momentous election day. I know which side he would be on. And, I would be right next to him, cheering on the possibility of a fruitful future.

Dear Jill,
When I am at the end of my days, I hope I am loved and supported as Sy was by you. He was blessed to have you. Dan and I send our love to you and your family

Sy was a great man. In both word and deed he shall always be remembered as such. His absence from this life is a loss for every man, and the world is less bright for want of his warmth. God has indeed brought one of his better angels home. My memories will be forever fond of Mr. Hirsch, who was so much a part of my childhood, and whose kindness touches me to this day. My deepest condolences, Harris

To Jill and Rueben.....Stephanie and I have shared only a small part of the pain with which you have lived these past several months. As always, our love and caring are present for you to draw upon as needed.
My sorrow could not be greater than if Sy had been my brother in fact rather than in spirit. I am sure that he would prefer that we now celebrate his life and remember his joys rather than dwell on our sorrow.

Dear Jill & Family:
So very sorry to hear about your husband, Sy's passing. My deepest sympathies go out to all of you. I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but we knew each other from Fort Clarke where you volunteered and I worked in the front office. I now live in NH and own a B&B. I remember those days vividly. Again, please know that people are thinking of you at this time of sorrow.
